The 5 volt connection on my power supply is running fine but the 12 volt was running around 30 volts (!). When I turned the knob all the way down it only got it around 25 volts. Any ideas?

First post;

Welcome to KLOV

The power supply will probably need to be looked at. The 12 volts is not as critical but that is too high.

Post a pic of the patient and we can go from there. There are many types of supplies and if it is a switcher just replace it. If it is a linear one then I would repair it.

This is a switcher type supply and as you can see not too expensive. I suspect you have either a linear supply or an ar type supply.

Do you have a load on +12 or are you measuring it with nothing connected? Linear power supplies work fine and can be measured unloaded, but switching power supplies don't generate a proper voltage unless they're connected to a load.

I wouldn't recommend measuring any power supply unloaded. It's not uncommon for them to measure fine without a load but develop a fault when one is connected.

you can use a simple auto light bulb to load that up for testing.

Thanks for the help and welcome guys, nice to be around other arcade lovers. I did test it with a load, I was running tekken 2 and its playing with a very fuzzy picture even after extensive adjustments to brightness, horizontal and vertical sizes and postioning that its impossible to play.

So I'm assuming if I can get that voltage down it should work?

I'll post some pictures when I get home, pretty sure it's a switcher power supply.

Thanks again

I don't know about Tekken 2, but the +12V rail is not usually used for anything other than audio, and sometimes lights. It shouldn't cause your picture fuzziness.

There should be a focus control on the monitor. It's usually a knob on the flyback - look for a wire with a suction cup going to the tube. The other end of that wire is connected to the flyback, and there should be one or two knobs on it. One for brightness, one for focus.

Also - post the type of monitor you have. I had one that had very low brightness and was very fuzzy, and it was an EEPROM that needed to be replaced.
