switching power supply in a DK ... need feedback please

i've had another PP-7B give up the ghost in DK3, and i need to get this game up and running (reliably) again

i've looked into rebuilding the power supply, and while i love the PP-7B's "drop-in style" those traces are way too close for my comfort (in regards to me rebuilding it). and "in-working-condition" PP-7Bs (along with everything else in the hobby) are ever-climbing in price

anyone else here just throw a switching PS with an adapter (so no harnesses get hacked up) in their DK, DK Jr, etc? thoughts/experiences?

the cap kits are super easy to install in the pp-7b. the case can be alittle tricky to get apart for some. our kit has caps all sized to fit perfectly on that pcb with case size, lead spacing, etc. and are the absolute best quality caps so you won't ever cap it again.

or you can send it off somewhere and have someone else cap it.

The DK switching power supply and adapter from Arcadeshop work great.

I can rebuild these and have a dkjr to test.

As long as the transformers are good, I would rebuild it.

Edit: how many pp-7bs do you have that are down? Pm me

This is a very easy rebuild trust me. The challenge is truly opening the case because the screws are locked in or strip easy.

I'd probably pay someone to rebuild it before I used an adapter. Just my opinion.

Agreeing with what others have said and +1 for security's kits. I've capped a PP-7A and PP-7B with his kits, and they are always spot on, with high quality caps.

The switcher kits are good temporary fixes imho, but can introduce screen jitter. Not always, and maybe not even noticeable to some, but there are a handful of us that agree it is one of the (sometimes multiple) causes of screen jitter in Nintendo cabs.

As a temporary fix, I just threw an Arcadeshop switcher kit into a DK that was having PS issues. So far it seems to be working, but it seems to be generating some Nintendo Hum that it wasn't before, and the blue fireballs look a bit strange.

It's working, though, and the guy who's office it's in is happy until I can pull the original supply for a rebuild, which is the permanent fix.
