Dumb question of the day but can a normal switching power supply be plugged straight into the wall (for testing purposes) or does it have go through cabinet wiring (filter, transformer, etc)?

My cabinet has a filter and giant transformer before going to a double wall outlet mounted into the cabinet, then the switcher psu and monitor plug separately into the outlet (ther is also a smaller iso transformer mounted on the monitor chassis).

Some of my pcb's make the large transformer hum even though the game works 100% and I would like to bypass the filter/large transformer if I could.

Define Normal?

If the PS is rated for 115 you're good to go.

If I'm understanding what you are saying, you have 115vac coming into a EMI filter, then going to a large transformer (step down and multiply power outs I assume) then the 115vac tees off into a service outlet to then power a isolation transformer for the monitor, and your switching power supply??

The EMI filter is just for Electro Magnetic Interference

Transformers buzz or humm normally even without a load, it's what they do

I'm assuming the giant transformer is 1:1 cause I just checked and I'm getting 123V AC at the input screws for my switcher so I'm assuming its ok to plug it straight into a wall. That big iso doesn't make any noise at all for most games but I do have a couple that do make it hum.....I'm thinking its the sound area of some bootleg boards that really pull the amps.
