I've had a working RB Tapper boardset in my Bud Tapper for awhile now, and finally dug out the "bought working" Bud Tapper boardset I have. Fire it up, and the sound is all wonky. Sounds cuts out or disappears all together, the music sounds weird (sound effects seem fine), or I get these loud thumps like the bass in a home theater system. Anyway, I wanted to see if swapping the SSIO boards would help me determine if it's the board or the chips. Anyone know which ROMS need to be swapped?

Yup you can swap out the SSIO on the boardset, and it should help you isolate the problem. More than likely the problem is on the SSIO, as that handles the inputs and the sound generation. I've never had a Root Beer Tapper on my bench, but I think there is a chance that the ROM's on the soundboard are the same as Bud Tapper. And as everyone always says..check the ribbons. If you do need to swap out the ROM's, just check and make sure that the ROM's are the same size. The SSIO PC can be strapped for 2532, and 2716's.

I had a quick minute over lunch and checked ribbon cables, etc. one more time, and I noticed on start up I get a "Sound board timeout" error message. Sometimes it shows up on startup, and sometimes it does not. Does that help the troubleshooting at all? A Google search showed there's a fix for the error (replacing A6), but not sure if that will fix the entire problem. Guess only one way to find out.

On an unrelated note, doesn't seem like high scores are saving either...

The timeout error, can be caused by the RAM on the SSIO. If the SSIO PCB does not boot-up as fast as the CPU expects..you get this error....
