I have been looking around for a Donkey Kong for a while. I have a DK Jr. and was wondering if anyone has both boards in 1 cabinet (a la Steve Wiebe in K of K). If so, is there any easy way to switch between the 2?

I checked out the website (arcadeshop i think) with the Double Donkey Kong and I don't think the sounds are acceptable.

It would not bother me to play DK in a DK Jr. cab. It would have the same "feel" as a regular DK.

Down the road, I think I may get the high score chip too. Drives me crazy that the high score is lost every time the machine is powered down.

you can swap the dk and jr pcbs in and out, changing connectors is easy, takes 2 seconds. I dont know about a switcher for both in the cab at the same time.

and steve in KoK has a ddk board, not two seperate ones.

Cool. Does the dk matter if it's a 2 or a 4 boardset (i don't know how many versions of the boards are out there, but I know there are different boardsets)? i would think they would have all the same connections....

Wow. I did not know that. I'm surprised TG didn't have a problem with that.

Thanks in advance!

The 4 board set will work in an upright but you will need the 7p sound cable in addition to the 9p and 10p cables.
Keep in mind if you use a 2 board set you should be able to mount both on the shelf, you just need to make an extension for the top bracket.
The only problem you might have is fitting the connectors on the board in the back, not sure if there is enough space as mine uses the edge connector.

a 4 board like stated needs more stuff, buy a 2 board and save the trouble. The connectors (8or9) just plug and play.

TG had a problem with steve playing on a DDK board.. which is why the whole movie was drama.. thats why they rejected his score "red goo" and crap and it was a ddk board

Also you can do like I did and convert the jr cabinet to an edge connector, simple cut and paste job with molex connectors, then you can add dk3 also! plus makes it a lot easier to swap games around, just one big connector and you can mount both boards, (even three if you expand the shelf) without removing the boards to change connectors, cause there isnt to much space to have 2 and swap connectors without takin them out for a min.

I agree using the edge connector is much easier.
I have a jamma harness in mine hooked up to a 6 in 1 switcher,so no need to even open the back.
I have DK,DKJR.Dig-Dug,Pac-Man,Galaga and a 60 in 1 in mine
The only problem I encountered was the screen orientation is different on a DK and DKJR than the rest.
I solved that problem by cutting the yoke wires and running them to the coin door and using high voltage molex connectors to flip the picture.
I put the pins in so that the connectors for horiz. can't be connected to the vert.connectors,so I don't blow the yoke.
Mk DK came jammatized and I have since obtained an original harness, incase I want to make it original.

Ok, that makes sense now. No mention of DDK in the movie. Just thought it was a random booger from some kid somehow got on the board. Directors of the movie probably wanted it that way to make it seem ridiculous. I thought it was ridiculous, so it worked.

Thanks again. That's good advice. I haven't nosed around in the game too much, so I'm unaware of all the connections. I'm glad to hear there is a good option.

yea the double donkey kong board issue with KoK was posted on twin galaxies site after the movie aired.

If you want here are the schematics for converting your dk jr to an edge connector. Take time to view this, it took me a while, it was the first thing I ever did on an arcade machine and mine is working perfect to today!

I can email this if needed, its a little bigger

Just checked out my cabinet and sure enough, the pcb has an unused edge connector. It also has another "slot" on the pcb shelf for a extra pcb. Looks like a DK will fit in nicely.

The more I learn about Nintendo cabs, the more I respect their thinking on how these are put together. Pretty slick. Especially for the early 80s.

the other slot is there, however you have to extend the metal bracket on the top in order to secure another board. And yes DK jr, DK and DK3 all can take an edge connector. If soldering isnt your thing then go with molex pins. That is what I used.

Buy this Comes with Connector you need and pins:

Here are extra pins if you need em:
https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=CECPIN010

Here is the crimper you need for molex pins:
https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=HT1921

And here is an extractor if you need it, you can use a bobby pin or the like (its to remove pins if you put em in the wrong spot):
https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=HT1884

And here is a tutorial:

Use the crimp pin connectors not the solder type.
That way if the wires need to be replaced you just pop the old pin out and crimp on a new one. A lot cleaner.
The solder ones have been known to cause problems.

here is a question I have a 4 board set in my upright DK. I want to put a 2 board set in it. can this be does or what do I need to make this work. Do all of the 4 board connectors connect into the 2 board set if so please explain step by step, thanks.

A 2 board set can be put in place of the 2 board set and I believe all the connectors are the same, only you will not need the 7P SOU cable on the 2 board set.
I checked the schematics and it looks like the connectors are labeled the same,so they should plug right into the corresponding sockets.

All the connectors are the same, you'll just need to relocate the mounting brackets higher to mount the 2 board set. - Barry
