I'm working on a SW cockpit restoration, which I'll start a thread for soon.

Documenting the disassembly, so I can do the cabinet work. I want to remove the 2 pieces that go from the front to back of the cabinet. I realize they are made up of 3 layers of 3/4" pb, when assembled together and that the inner one separates from the other 2 easily, since the inner most layer doesn't share the fat t-molding with the others.

I removed the 2 screws up front and one at the rear that go through the main cabinet sides and into this piece. It is still secured. What is left holding it in place? Is it likely stapled somewhere?

I might be able to help, I am also doing a rebuild and to the point where am I am just about done, but still play the game in it. Took some time off from it. Here's a picture of my restore of it.

What have you take off so far?

I have done this

Remove the smaller inner pieces first, this reveals more deep holes

There are screws at the bottom of the deep holes

There is a square in the head of the screw (You would know what I mean)

Undo all of the screws at the bottom of the deep holes

I will take pics of my dissassembled cab if you need me to

@joeycuda-

PM me your email address. I can forward an email with pictures from KLOV brother Bones3010. He sent me great directions for taking apart a SWCP. I needed to saw mine in half to get it down the stairs into my basement.

If you are talking about the canopy...here it is from memory.

After you remove the screws from the outside, you need to take off the metal brackets that hold the plexiglass pieces in place. Remove the plexiglass. On the inside of the canopy there are plastic plugs that need to be removed to get access to square drive screws that connect to the inside edges of the cabinet. All of the screws need to be removed. Then, you will need to gently pry the front and back as it is stapled/glued in place. Before doing this, I removed the wood cross piece so I could remove 1 canopy piece at a time.

Thanks to all of you who posted, but m_mcgovern, you nailed it. I did get to the recessed square drive screws last night, then realized it was still on there. Yeah.. it's stapled. I got the gap to open some, but didn't want to rough it up. I'll gently pry it apart tonight.

Instead of re-stapling where they did, I'll probably hide a screw under there.

Thanks all..

I think you will find that just reassembling with the screws is enough. That i essentially what I did. I did leave the staples in place of the wood cross piece and lined it up to the original holes and tapped it back into place. It should be sturdy enough with the screws only for home use.

Screwed, glued, and stapled.

The screws keep it on just fine for reassembly.

I took mine down in mainly three sections. (with lots of other parts)

I think I'll only need to pull the 3 layer pieces that go front to back.

Of those, there's the outer most piece, with the artwork and actual laminate, not vinyl. Those pieces are perfect. Oddly, the middle piece has some swelling, so I'm thinking about reproducing the middle piece. Unfortunately, that means the wide t-molding will have to be removed and then the slot recut with the new piece in the sandwich. The pieces closest to the inside are fine.

I'll definitely need to replace the cross beam piece and the panel with the vent directly over the CRT. That piece is cracked underneath and sags.

Since these pieces will be covered in black vinyl, I'm a bit torn on whether to use particle board, as originally done, or upgrade to birch ply. I think for the panel with the vent and the cross beam, I'll definitely use plywood.

The middle layer in the 3 piece sandwich, not so sure. I could use plywood, and after vinyl and t-molding, you'd never know what it was made out of.

Thanks for the pics and tips! I should have a resto thread up soon.
