Surf Planet: Graphics Problems

I obtained a Surf Planet PCB from a vender on eBay a couple of weeks ago. When I tested it I found that there were severe graphical problems with the game. Basically wherever there are contrasting light and dark objects, such as black text on a white background, the screen appears to be smeared across those raster lines.

When I looked at the game manual online it showed that the PCB had to be installed in a cage with a special filter board between the PCB and the JAMMA harness. The PCB I had did not have a filter board or the cage, so I assumed the graphics chip was screwed up from not having the filter.

I immediately found and purchased another Surf Planet PCB, this time in the cage with the filter booard (plus the joystick!), and thought that would be the end of the troubles. However, the new PCB has the same graphical problem even with the filter board in place.

Is anyone familiar with this game who might know what the source of the pproblem might be?

I've got a Surf Planet laying around - I'm pretty sure that filter board is merely for hooking up the dedicated controller and the subwoofer that came with those kits.

So, are you saying both your old and new Surf Planet PCB's have the same issue or putting the filter board on your first Surf Planet still causes the issue?

I am saying that both boards exhibit the same graphics glitch.

I found a Surf Planet manual here in pdf form:

http://www.crazykong.com/manuals/SurfPlanet.man.pdf

On page 1-11 of the manual it says not to connect the PCB to the JAMMA harness without the filter board or else damage to the PCB might result, so I assumed the first board I got, which didn't have the filter board or the isolation cage, was damaged due to improper use. I thought that the newer one would be okay because it was complete, and was very surprised to see the same problem.

Page 1-12 describes the addition of ferrite beads to the JAMMA harness. I do not have these of course. Could this be the source of my problem?
