SuperAuctions Aug 21 Granite Shoals, TX (near Austin)

Hi, I'm new here. I just recently started digging into the arcade collection hobby and noticed there isn't a dedicated thread for this upcoming auction near Austin.

I'm going to the auction preview on Friday in the mid-afternoon to see if there's anything I'm after. I'll try to make a list of the games I see there and post them Friday night. Hopefully the list will help some Austinites decide if they want to go or not.

Here's the flyer for the event, it at least shows a picture of a ms pac man machine, so perhaps there will be machines other than DDR..

Anyone else planning on going to this one?

I want an nba jam cabinet. nba jam t.e., hangtime, even nfl blitz 4 player may do, I just need a decent midway 4 player cabinet to put an original nba jam board in. I played nba jam a bunch as a kid, especially on my game gear. Now with the wii version coming out I somehow stumbled upon this amazing world of arcade collecting where NBA Jam arcades are selling for less than $500 these days.

I'm sure the wii version will be cool and all, but the original first arcade NBA Jam is the ultimate, to me.

My wife is a huge fan of police trainer, so i'm on the lookout for that too.

yeah, the last NBA Hangtime game was put out in 96, then it was blitz and NBA Showtime for a number of years, so I'm guessing there's a better chance of seeing the latter games rather than original JAM or Hangtime cabinets.

the one bit i'm not sure of is that the blitz/showtime cabinets have a 49way optical joystick, whereas JAM and Hangtime editions took an 8way. I really hope there's a converter from the 49way to 8way, b/c it would be kind of a shame to have to swap the 49way for 8way, then have to swap back again if I wanted to play blitz or whatever.

Question: where do I get some of that heavy duty Saran wrap looking stuff that you wrap around the cabinets to protect them from the weather in the back of a truck? Does the auctioneer 'package' the game that way for you, or do we bring that ourselves?

You're on your own with the packaginng and hauling off of anything at the auction. You might get some muscle help from someone that works there, but your better bet is from your fellow buyers. You can buy that saran wrap stuff at a U-Haul storage place or the hardware store. Be sure to bring straps and blankets to hold things together and to prevent some transport damage.

If they don't have NBA Jam at the auction, I see them come up on Craig's List a lot up in Dallas, including one that popped up for free once. I'd start checking that regularly or set up an e-mail alert for it if you are really gunning for that particular game.

Good luck, and have fun!

Aw man there was an NFL blitz on the Austin craigslist just recently. In fact the ad is still there: http://austin.craigslist.org/vgm/1881883452.html

It's a 4 player cab, I dont know if it's still there (and no it's not mine). Just FYI if you're still looking for one.

They have pinballs...

One of the most important items to have if you are moving more than one game in a pickup are Tie Down Straps. These things are freaking crucial when it comes to moving games.

Items I suggest and personally tend to carry:
cardboard- Helps slide and protect game if you're laying it flat in the bed of a pickup
tie down straps- Keeps game from flying out of the back of your truck if it's standing up back there.
handtruck- Makes it easier to move games around. SuperAuctions will have some you can borrow but if you have your own it makes it easier and you don't have to leave your ID with the auction folks.
Shrink Wrap- Keeps your games dry in case of rain.
Small toolkit- Wrenches/ socket set, screwdrivers, security bit set and a flashlight. Because you never know.

i found a few resources on the net that also suggested bringing a 100 foot extension cable & power splitter. is that information still current, will I need to bring those items too?

I wouldn't take an extension cord in there, they might think it's theirs. Since this is an amusement center all the games should be close to an outlet. They also turn the games on before they start to auction them off. People bid more on games that are known to be working than games of unknown status.

how does the preview work? will the super auction guys require a deposit and bidding registration to even go in and look? or can we look around to decide if we'll be bidding or not?

You sign in (register) when you get there. If you're not in their system they keep your driver's license and give it back to you later when you check out. No deposit needed.

You can get a big 18" roll from EcoBox on Metric between Kramer and Rutland.

Pay attention that the Blitz cab MIGHT have a medium-res monitor in it, which would nullify your attempts to play NBA Jam.

A note about this auction:

Usually when you see an auction like this (local at some entertainment place that went out of business), the prices are typically pretty HIGH compared to what you would find at the regular Super Auction in Mesquite every few months. And it's not uncommon to buy something with problems. The last couple auction like this that happened near Austin ended up with my work being inundated with repair calls.

And after looking at the pics on the flyer, it would NOT surprise me if there were few actual videos or pins (or the videos will be HUGE that you don't have space for and cost a lot) and the majority was stuff like redemptions, coin op pool tables, air hockey, and skeeball.

I think it's interesting that I can't find out much info about "Funland Emporium" on the web...

BTW - please post your findings after the preview on Friday. I need to pick up a game in Kingsland at some point, and if it's interesting enough, I may due it on Saturday....

This reminds me of my most important auction tip: GET YOUR LICENSE BACK BEFORE YOU LEAVE!!!!!

I turned 1.5 hours of driving into 3 one Saturday and I wasn't very happy about it.
