First, I plan on doing cap kits on both monitors. Before I did, I wanted to see if a cap kit would fix the issue I'm having with the top monitor. I know punchout's are noorious for color PROM issues, but it just wanted to make sure I'm fixing the problem. I turned the red, green, and blue down a bit to match the monitor below.

Here's the image:

Bare with me, I just got the game yesterday and it doesn't have a manual.

Where do I change the video connections on the monitor? Is it a PCB board cable swap or on the actual monitor?

Look at the Punch-Out manual on arcarc.xmission.com.

You should be able to look at the back of the machine and see the cables going to the monitor. Try swapping the harness that has 5 wires from the top to the bottom.

While you are in there and if you get a chance could you see what revision ROMs are on your CPU board. The lower row of 5 on the CPU board, it's usually written in red/pink and should be 'e', 'e-1', or something.

2600 is correct. Look up the manual with the site he provided.

Swap the video cables to see if it really is a monitor issue or if it is a pcb issue.

I think you are right though, by the pics it looks like a cap kit...hard to tell without testing the swap of cables.

Believe it or not, I took the PCB board out to get the acid-laden-decades old batteries out and get the ROM version for 2600. Lucky for me there was no PCB damage and the battery holder looked really good. There's a filter board that hooks up to the PCB board to the wire harness. The filter board didn't seem secure when I took it off. I carefully put the PCB board set back more securely than I found it. Sure enough, it worked!!! The top monitor now looks like it should.

Thanks for the manual and tips. You all have been a great help. I now know how to diagnose whether its the PCB or the monitor.

BTW, how does the ROM version play a role? Did one version have issues or is one better than the other?

As a side note, do you know where I can get a KO button? The one on my machine is a small regualr blue happ button.

Great job fixing the game. I'd still plan for a cap kit in the future.

ROM revision wouldn't play a role in this situation. I'm just interested in the PO games and like to find different revisions.

2600,

Yeah, Still plan on the cap kit for sure!

I'm just curious...do I have a very early version? Where does my version fit in?

Someone mentioned a version where SSM is from "Venice Beach" and in later versions, it says USA. Also they mention a Great Tiger flaw that got removed in later versions.

From what I can tell, a lot of Nintendo games start at rev 'e'. So you would have the first revision.

Ha! Just got my super punch out and this sounds like a thread I would start about mine. I immediatly bought cap kits for both monitors, which both are shrunken. The cap kits came today. This weekend gonna work on it. Next is to find a po and arm wrestling working boards. Love this trilogy.

2600,

I have two cap kits coming my way for the EZV. What's your view on getting new flybacks for them? Should I go to the expense and buy them even though the ones I have still work?

Also, is there a more desirable ROM version? Just curious.

vicjw66,
It's interesting that you, I and SanTe all got Punchouts with a few days. Of course, we got SPO's. :)

This thread needs some visuals...

Everyone has a personal preference. Do what you feel is best. I usually cap it first, but have had some flybacks fail shortly after a cap kit.

I just like to have the other revisions, I don't think anyone has any preference or cares much on revisions to PO or SPO. Most people I ask to check find it too bothersome to check.

Friz and Krajkerjac,

I hope my machine will look as good as all of yours. It looks like a lot of work went into them.

I've only seen an Nintendo Arm Wrestling at an arcade here in town in 1993. Everyone laughed at the crazy sounds it made.

Yes, it's a fun game. Hope you get one!
BTW - Not a game for everyone. Has the cool sounds, but like PO, very repetitve...
