SH*T! My Super Punch Out is now acting up. The damn thing worked fine for 3 or 4 games today... then I noticed some "clicking" in the vocal audio side... I figured the pot on the top monitor was acting up as it had shown signs of being dirty already so I adjust a bit but the clicking didn't stop. I cycle the power... when I power back up the music plays... the attract screen runs though it's course without issue, but if I attempt to play a game, the music plays fine, but when the bottom screen changes to the text BEAR HUGGER at the point where it's supposed to vocally say "CANADIAN BEAR HUGGER"... I get a semi-loud pop/crack sound then it locks up.

I've tried removing the filter board... same issue. I checked the voltage and it seems to be running at 5.05v so thats not the issue...

Any suggestions? I paid $309 for the board set and... well... I wouldn't be all too thrilled if the damn thing has just died. Of course I sold the friggin P.O. boardset that came in the cab just last week so I can't pull the ROMs and stick them in that boardset...

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Also... chances are this issue is going to be beyond my capabilities (guessing)... anyone know who works on Nintendo PCBs?

My PCB experience "very limited" but "could" be a bad micro that you may be able to snatch off another PCB. NOTHING too serious so don't give up on your NEW board just yet.

This is actually a "very good" "how to" video from a fellow klov repair man. My Punch-out was doing something very similar and this repaired the problem.

have a peek:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WW9fAyJtNI4

If you watch near the end (past the schematics explanation) you will see video of the PCB and possible bad chip area. Excellent reference video

Hmmm...very interesting. The problem is that I am having issues with the VOICE side... which evidently goes through some synthesizing chip (as mentioned in the video). Also strange is that once the voice attempts to play, it locks the board up. Perhaps if I can locate the synthesizing chip and pull it, if it plays, maybe that's the issue?

Also, I have two Punch Out cabs here... so today I plan on pulling my P.O. and trying the S.P.O. on the known working cab and vice versa... that way it would eliminate a harness wiring issue as the culprit...

Worst case scenerio I can swap the S.P.O. chips on to the working P.O. boardset and determine if it's a S.P.O. upgrade issue or the standard P.O. boardset issue.

Jon,

I am the one who had the SPO board that you bought off of ebay. Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the board. I tested the board in my PO cabinet and let it run all day. I did not have any problems. I tested the board once more before i shipped it.

I watched the video that was posted above and i would try and replace the RP2A03. You mentioned you had another PO board so you could just swap the chips.

The video also mentioned the rom chip next to the RP2A03 could also be an issue. When PO boards were upgraded to SPO, there was one rom that was not replaced. I dont remember the location of the rom but it says CHP1 on the label(the SPO roms have an S on them i believe). If thats it next to the RP2A03, you can swap that chip with the one on your PO also. But check the labels to make sure.

Lastly, like you said, you can swap all the SPO roms to your PO CPU board. But i would try the RP2A03 first.

If that does not fix the issues, then hopefully someone else can help. Once again, sorry you are having issues.

Hey bro... not angry at you at all... when I got the board it DID work... and actually it still does (the attract anyway). I heard the voice get worse and worse over a game or two... I thought it was the sound board pot, but evidently not... so the issue didn't surface until I took possession... had it not worked out of the box that would be one thing... it DID work out of the box... and this issue cropped up after a couple games. Shit happens when you're dealing with 26+ year old stuff...

Thanks for the tips... I'll give it a go and report back here what I determine.

Jon

FYI, the RP2A03 is not responsible for the voices. The voices are done by the VLM5030 which is also located on the CPU board.

Anyone know how/why the voices would cause a complete lock up? Or should I be looking for something else that causes the lock up and the voice is the symptom rather than the problem?

Alright...

...so I pull the VLM5030... I get the same result... locks up at "BEAR HUGGER" text screen. I then pull the ROM that is next to the VLM5030 as it appears to be related (looking at the configuration of the music circuit, etc... I power up... I get the same result.

I check out all the components near and far...all look ok...some look semi beat up, but what do you want for 25 years of usage... I plop the VLM5030 and ROM back in to place and fire it up (just in case)...

"CANADIAN BEAR HUGGERRRRR!" comes screamin' out when I test! W000t!

The game's working fine! I just played 5 or 6 games and got 21st place. That Vodka Drunkinski is one tough mo-fo!

My guess is the VLM5030 was the culprit. The legs were pretty dirty... I cleaned them up a bit before I stick it back in the socket.

W00T!!! SPO is back in action!

Thank you all for the suggestions... and thank you 2600 for pointing out the specific chip to look at.
