Hello all,

I just bought my first arcade machine (Super Pac Man) at auction about a week ago. Once I got it home and fired it up, it didn't work. Fortunately, I didn't pay much for it and now wondering how to fix it. When I plug the machine in, the monitor turns on and I can hear air coming through the speaker. The screen takes about ten seconds to turn on and it is always just a grey screen with white verticle lines. All the fuses look good, and I've disconnected all the connectors and reconnected them. Still nothing. I tried putting it into safe-test mode and the grey/white screen doesn't change. I've also learned that the dimmer switch for the monitor does work, but I don't really know where to go from here. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a monitor problem? Or a PCB board problem? I do think I will be putting in the updated power supply source soon.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Going out on a limb, and I am no expert, but I do own a Super Pacman... Here are a few things to check.

1) Don't visually chack the fuses, pull out each one and use the continuity test on your DMM to check them. I didn't think I had any bad fuses either until I pulled them out to check.

2) When the game goes into attact mode after power up, there should be sounds occasionally emitting from the game. If you do not hear this, you could try to adjust the pot on the MPU board (this is volume control) to see if it was turned down all the way.

3) Check your voltage at the big silver capacitor between the red test switch and the dip switch bank (upper right corner of the board). You should see 5V there.

Post what you find, but my gut is saying this is probably a board issue. You could also try to adjust the horizontal/vertical on the monitor to see if that helps. I'm no expert, and pretty new to this too, but I'm willing to help out if I can.

Thanks for the quick responses. I will check all that you two have mentioned and bring the results back hopefully later tonight.

I can say that I have never heard any sounds from my super pac while on attract mode...

To me it also sounds like a board issue. If you are getting a grey / white screen you are at least getting something on the screen...

Make sure the harness and other ribbon cables are connected well on the board also...

I experienced a similar problem when I installed my high score save kit because my connections were loose.

Good luck!

So I finally got a new board and power supply via eBay. Seller didn't know if either worked, but they were cheap and did change things, so I feel like its at least progress. Now I am getting feedback on the screen. I pushed the red button near the coin door and it beeped, not sure what that means. Also the test mode still does nothing.

I put the new board in, and nothing happened. Then replaced the power supply board and the screen actually had output. Looks like parts of a menu screen, then a bunch of jumbled up colors. Hopefully the pictures will help. Anyone know where to go from here?

Thanks again.

Have you check the voltages on the power supply?

I know bob Roberts makes a rebuilt kit for these.

IT WORKS! I switched the new board back to my old board with the new power supply and it booted right up. I did find out the little red button next to the coin door is aftermarket I believe. When pressed at the intro screen it adds credits, which I can't understand why any arcade owner would want that for a business. Also, the test switch to show if anything is wrong doesn't work. Sound, screen, and play work great!

Thanks again to everyone for the help!

The red button is a service credit button. Its there for testing and doesn't advance the coin meter when a credit is added via that switch. Its not aftermarket, many games had this.
