This is kind of a strange problem so I will do my best to explain it well.

I just bought a 3 Player Super Off Road cabinet.

When you start a game there is no sound and game pauses or hesitates every second, for about 5-10 seconds. Then the cars move again for about a second or two and it pauses again.

Since there is no sound I thought it might be related, and since it doesn't happen in attract mode I went into the test mode and turned ON sound for demo mode. Sure enough the same problem happened in Attract/Demo mode.

Finally a ran a diagnostic on the sound and it came back with Audio Processor Failure (or something similar).

So, where does that leave me? A new PCB? I can't find a way to just turn off the sound in in the settings.

I already contacted The Real Bob Roberts and he has no knowledge or parts for this thing.

Any help is appreciated.

I just ran across the same problem yesterday, U86 is a MICROCHIP AY-3-8910 and it is programmable. I guess there available for about $6.00, I have never had any luck programing any MICROCHIP devices in the past. My customer also has a two player that is still working. What I'm wondering is does anyone have any AY-3-8910's that are already programed for Super Off Road or does anyone Know how to copy one. I'm going to swap U86 on the two games Monday, I will post the results.

Oh thanks, I have a track pack board maybe I can pull it from and see if that fixes it. Will check now.

THANKS

I just looked, and I did try swapping that chip already with no luck. I still had the same issue. It was an obvious chip and said sound on it so it was the first thing I tried.

Man, I got all excited LOL

that's good, I was hoping it wouldn't be the programmable part. Now I just have to find what is not allowing U86 to work.

If you do, please let me know. I have two bad boards so hopefully I can replace a chip from one to the other. If you need me to in order to test something just let me know. I will bust out the solder sucker if I gotta :).

Is there anyway to just mute the game? Like I mentioned above, if Demo Sound is turned off then the demo runs fine, it's only when the audio is trying to be processed that it messed up.

I was just curious if there was a way to disable the sound and I missed it.

I think I have this one cracked, maybe.

I started pulling roms on the top board and U14, U15, U25, U27 all came up bad when compared to the MAME set using Rominit.

So I put my dumped version of those roms into mame and sure enough, the exact same problem happens. I am so happy, just need to wait for my blank chips to arrive and burn.

It seems to be the bad U27 that is causing this error. I just duplicated it in mame, putting back the good roms one by one and it's U27. Must be the rom where all of the sound is stored because sound in the main menu doesn't even work without it.

Well thought, I had it fixed up since I could duplicate it in MAME, but I burned the new chips and put them, still get the same issue.

Gonna run through the rest of the roms and then check the 2 sound chips.
