Ive tried a bunch of different settings and even restored to factory settings, but the shield between the flippers never pops up during gameplay, even if the bonus I get is indeed "Raise Shield." I put it in test mode and tested it specifically and it pops up and drops perfectly in test mode, so I know the coil is good.

Any suggestions?

That's really weird. The ONLY think I can think of is possibly the I/O chip for that specific function of the game. In otherwords, you get the "raise shield" during gameplay, the CPU sends the pulse to the I/O chip to trigger the solenoid, and it drops the signal there? You have proven the wiring is ok, and the coil is good, so that's the only thing I can come up with. If you have access to another I/O board, I would swap it to see if the problem follows. If not, maybe someone here has another SMB pin they could test it for you?

Sounds like a switch problem to me. It's been so long since I've played that game that I can't remember how you activate that thing but a switch not making contact could prevent you from getting into that mode.

I should really play that game tonight :)
