super mario bros: purple screen possible wire came off (pic inside)

Hey guys and gals,

so when my SMB turns on, it is a purplish screen. Upon further inspection, i found this dual black/green wire with attachment hanging from the harness. No spots appear to be missing and i am afraid to just touch it down the row...

could it be the wire or something else?

thanks!

Have you followed the wires back. They may not even have anything to do w/ your problem. Maybe a coin counter or coin mech that's been disconnected. Possible causes... connector on the harness. If your seeing purple then is sounds like the green is out. With that being said, it may very well just be the monitor. Do you have a second monitor you can try, or a spare pcb you can plug into that monitor?

i will follow that line back tomorrow (we are in TX 110 degree hell right now)

The guy i bought it from says is worked before he moved it 1500 miles to here...it worked again once before sending it to me. The monitor is recently rebuilt... I think I might have a DKjr board I will attempt to install..

I really want to see this beast run!

THANK YOU FOR THE INPUT!

recently rebuilt doesn't necessarily mean anything. a cap kit to many could be considered "rebuilt". I've found that if you don't reflow the color drive transistors extensively on the neckboard, you will certainly have the problem you have now. it means your green is missing.

try pounding on the side of the cab while the game's on. do the colors intermittently come back and go away or stay? if so, it's probably cold solder on the neckboard. otherwise, you can try wiggling the wiring harness, does that make the colors come back? who's also to say it's not the video input header on the chassis that's suspect, or if your monitor has inverter boards that are jumpered to be disabled (like in my dual PC-10)

that's what you're looking for. I don't know the color scheme for Nintendo wiring harnesses, but like Cmndr Brain says, that might not even be your problem (the broken wire). you'll need a pinout to be certain.

I did the "hit" on the side and shook it ...nothing.
Tried playing with harness to get reaction...nothing.

I am going to have to find the wire colors for that harness and see what gives...

I really want to see her play and i cant find a similar board right now to go in there to make sure that isnt the issue. Those mini connects the harness goes to on the outside of the box that holds the boards is weird..i havent really seen those much and so im in unfamiliar territory.

thanks for the advice

if that wire is your green, and you find the pin it goes to, I think you can strip that insulator off and maybe wrap it around and dab some solder on it to reconnect it.

just a tip. good luck.
