Hey guys,
Anybody know if anyone has designed a custom
SMB bezel? I seem to remember seeing one but I can't remember where.
I'm thinking of designing a bezel and a CPO to fit a Vs CP.
Just wondering if someone did this already?
Greg

Someone did design a SMB bezel already, but it'd still be neat to see what you can come up with, I say go for it.

Yeah, I'm currently collecting hi res original SMB related
Artwork and images. I want to keep it in the same vein as
The original bezels (so it won't look too out of place next to the originals)
If anybody has any good images send 'em my way or PM me for my info.

Yes, that would be ideal. Make sure it's screen printable and with a limited color palette. Think Mario Bros.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. Nothing too crazy
But something that captures the overall feel of the game.
5-6 colors total.

This was the bezel in question:

I remember blkdog bashing the shit out of it when he first came here, too :D

Hey, I saw that on eBay not too long ago. Did you just buy it. or was it you who had it up for sale? Either way where did the artwork come from? Is it screened or a decal?

It's a good question, haven't picked up the game yet. I'll be doing that next week, and yes, it was from ebay.

Yep the Dr. Mario looks good cuz the original marquee was very vector/solid color oriented. The SMB was tough because the marquee is raster, full of gradients and fades, and quite frankly sucks. But because it IS the original marquee, I kinda needed to keep the same style and feel to make the bezel 'fit'. If I could design both from the ground up, they would be a lot more simple, like the Dr. Mario marquee. I was asked by several folks to work on the SMB bezel, against my better judgment, because of the style of the SMB marquee. I am now working only on the vector style vs. marquee-inspired bezels. My next one is Castlevania. This is the file after more tweaking:

You can see how the rounded corner trapezoidal viewing area on the SMB bezel hearkens back to the DK bezel next to it. Wide at the top, narrow at the bottom:

I later changed the Dr. Mario bezel opening to match that same viewing area shape.

Love this graphic(I should change his outfit to blue scrubs and bring him down to the level of the common man):

You need to round your stroke ends. It's a stroke setting in Illustrator. Looks good. Lose the gradient on his head gear. :)

I think they both look pretty damn good! Like I said before
I was really never a huge fan of the SMB marquee art (it just seemed Bad LSD trip-esque to me) but I think you did a great job at emulating the style.
I really like the Dr. Mario bez.

Yep, I know. I did it like 4 years ago for fun, and wasn't paid for my time. Never quite finished all the tweaking. Or got lazy.

I can't wait to see what you come up with for Castlevania. I tried to make my Castlevania cab look like a dedicated cab matching the purple cabinet color with the marquee and used red t-molding. A nice castlevania bezel might tie everything together perfectly.
