I have a Super Bagman PCB that has been partially working. It will coin up, start etc., but the graphics are mangled. See photo

So I went through the usual repair list:
Check voltages
Clean PCB
All new capacitors
New memory
New z80
Then new EPROMs.

The screen is still showing random graphics? DAMN! Who else out there has a Super bagman with some tips?

It kinda looks like there is a adress or data line thats not doing what its told. you might wanna try using a logic probe and see if there is anything wierd.

Logic

I was thinking along those lines as well. I just don't know where to start on this PCB, so I was hoping someone had seen a similar issue on Bagman / Super bagman. thanks

Well not too many people have this board, so that puts you at a disadvantage right off the bat.

But keeping in mind that the Super Bagman upgrade was exactly that : a daughtercard upgrade; have you tried the obvious reseating of the daughtercard? That looks similar to how a N* VS daughtercard game will look with an improperly seated card. Also, since you have other Bagman's on hand, have you tried swapping the daughtercard and appropriate EPROMs to another working Bagman board (thereby converting that board to a Super)?

And of course, if all else fails, this Minnesotan right here will buy it off your hands :D

Have not had this issue on this board but have had a similar issue on a different stern seeberg game. In my case it was a bad timing crystal.

More info

All the chips have been re-seated, since I replaced them and the daughter card and PCBs have been cleaned and re-tried many times. I also swapped the PROMs from a known good PCB without positive effect.

A new crystal might be an easier option for a test rather than the logic probe for now.

crystal

I replaced the crystal and still have the same results. I guess it's time to start using the logic probe...

Any other bagman PCB collectors who've seen this issue?

Back at it again

So I decided to break out my Bagman board sets and play a bit.
I played about 10 games and then ...

I started to think about the damn Super Bagman PCB and had to start working on it again. :)

I started this time around by replacing the 2 - 40 pin sockets on the daughtercard since mine were mangled by someone once an had a lot of corrosion, bends, etc. That took a while and was a pain, but now I have new, clean, machine pinned sockets completed.

No changes to the boot sequence from this, of course.

I pulled out the 74LSxxx chips and tested them in the LEAPER-1. (I didn't have this unit before)
All chips are good.

I think it's time to start evaluating traces (again)

I'd like to get all 3, yup THREE of my board sets up and running. :D
I have owned these boards for a long time and I still haven't found a Bagman or Super Bagman cabinet to put them in.

If I can get them all running then perhaps I can eventfully sell one to help fund purchasing a cabinet.

Screen garbage

I found a few things wrong with the other non-working Bagman PCB.
Some bad, crusty solder joints and a bunch of repairs that looked questionable.
The I found a mylar cap with a broken wire... fixed that and booted the game.

Screen garbage (see picture)

Now I have both the Bagman PCB #2 and Super Bagman is the same state.

It seems unlikely they would both have the same bad trace. Probably a bad component somewhere...

ArcadeSD

Umm, no thanks. I bought one of those cards and while the game list of alright, I think the sound is terrible and I really haven't used it. It's not as good as the real arcade PCB or a JROK for example.

It would be a lot easier to fix this board if Stern had made schematics.
A Williams PCB, like Robotron, for example has fantastic documentation and you can fix many issues within minutes because of this.

Test rig

I am going to make a test harness for the bench so I can work on the boards easier. It should only take a few minutes since I have all the parts already.

Request - If anyone has a high resolution single large format scan of the Bagman schematics let me know. The PDFs that are out there are not useful, much of the text is un-readable.

I can host the file if someone has one that's good quality. thanks!

Bought a Bagman PCB off of a KLOVr that was sold as non-working. Showed static garbage, and the Fluke could not communicate with the board. Wracked my brain for a while, until I looked at the manual and saw that it has a dip switch (#8 maybe) that halts the game. Flipped that dip, and the board booted right up. Might be worth checking.

bagman

Yeah, Bagman does have a halt / freeze DIP switch. :)

This is a hardware issue though. I own 3 board sets... 2 were working for many years and now I have only 1 working.

next

Used logic probe at the chip locations: 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B and 6E of the video circuit comparing the good PCB to the bad one.

After spending some time verifying the working board against the non-working board I noticed chip 74LS161AJ at location 4A had pin 16 stuck HIGH (edited).

Next I am going to remove this chip and solder a socket into place.

BTW - The Bagman PCBs seem to have really thin traces and brittle, hard solder joints. Unsoldering is usually pretty easy with some patience, but it seems easy to lift a trace on these boards.

I tried working on a Bagman pcb once and they have the smallest traces I've seen. I pulled a few traces working on it and finally just sent the board off to someone to fix before it was too far gone.

I should have JAMMA adapters in stock.

Never seen a good scan of the schematics.

Bagman

Just looking for a single page, high res scan of the schematics, thanks.
I have a JAMMA adapter and a new test cable for my bench.

Not making progress with this board.
