I've come into possession of a suntory tapper board set. I've got it plugged in what I think is correct, but when it starts, all I get is a series of color bars on the screen. Is this normal? How would I fix this?
Cool, you've got a rare pcb which may or may not be a bootleg.
There are two common versions of this game -- one with Budweiser beer and another with root beer. In the late 1990s, a couple of boards made by SEGA featuring the Suntory logo were discovered. Sega denies they ever produced the board and it is not listed in any of their databases. The Suntory Tapper board is a complete re-engineering of the MCR/III hardware. Suntory is a defunct brand of Japanese beer.
I'd check and see if there are dip switches on the pcb. As color bars are normal in test mode and maybe at boot? Can't remember. Trick would be to find a manual or schematic for that oddball board.
thought is that the ram is stuck thinking the tilt is on, despite being disconnected and everything. went to a pro who can do the logic analysis for way cheaper (well, 5 weeks ago, so not sure on loss to arcade, but I think it was right move.)
