Hi Everyone,

I am in the middle of a large restoration project. I have 6 Virtual World 3.0 Cockpit simulators that I am getting back up and running.

The biggest problem with these cockpits is that, of the two monitors in each cockpit, one of them is the dreaded 25 inch k8000 medium res monitor.

These monitors are worse than crap, and give me nothing but fits! So...rather than continually repairing them, I am looking for a better monitor to change them out with. Any idea as to what I could swap out these monitors for? Or am I doomed?

Thanks!

of the 25" variety, you could use the WG U5000 or the WG K7500 if you like WG.

I'd stick with Wells, I hear nothing but bad things for Neotec's stuff.

what's the K8000 doing?

Well the one that is currently kicking my butt is simply not sending anything to the tube. You can hear the "whine" of power when you turn it on, but no picture, or glow in the neck of any kind.

Thanks for the input! I'll look into them. I have 6 of these monitors total, so the swap will have to be slow.

Here is one of the cockpits in action to give you an idea of what I'm working with.

is the flyback bad on it? I just changed one on a 33" K8000 (standard res, is what I'm told Ridge Racer runs at) and every single solder pad on it burned off. after some delicate hacking I was able to make it work. :D

Chad at arcadecup has a 25" K8000 flyback for sale.

I'm not entirely sure about the operation of the monitor, I'm lucky mine works, but points you have to consider is that the K8000 uses 2 isolation transformers, and the power supply boards obviously have to work, or else the rest of it won't.

there's some components on my power supply board that have been changed as evident by the flux around the solder joints.

I know we don't all have flyback testers in our tool arsenal but do you know of anyone nearby you that might have one? I'm kind of leaning towards yours being bad. if that ever gets checked, then I'd look at rebuilding the power supply board. there's not a whole lot to it if you're handy at picking out the replacements on mouser or something.

that's about all I can lend in the way of advice on the subject.

Not really sure. While I am a master of the proprietary components of the cockpit (which is MOST of the hardware), monitors are not my forte. Which is why I was looking to swap them out for something a little more trustworthy.

I took the monitor into a local arcade repair place last week, they are taking a look at it for me.

monitors aren't too bad. there's definitely a science to them... something I too don't possess a mastery in. but I can troubleshoot on every level but the electronics level relatively well I guess.

shitty part about the K8000 is WG doesn't support it anymore. and there's little to no documentation on it. and also, since it came in 2 different resolutions with the same model #, there's discrepancies with the cap kit they take. mine had everything contained in the Bob Roberts cap kit though, if that counts for anything, I just had a couple that I didn't change out cause of their voltage values, but after the fact I'd realized it was serviced before (as noted, the flux on the solder joints)... so who knows. :)
