I know this has been discussed before. How do you guys do it?

Will Citristrip do it? I need to get the glue and bits of the old CP off...

1 1/2" wire wheel on a drill takes off glue and all, and leaves it ready to prime and paint.

Ask Matt Sell for a reference on how well this works. He used my method on his Crystal Castles at one of the repair parties before the show.

I saw him working on it. Trying to avoid the work. Been sweating my ass off for the last 3 days as is... vacation, my ass (actually, yesterday I was sweating while having a beer on the patio of a restaurant on Lake Union with my boat moored to the restauarant's dock, so yesterday was good)

I use a heat gun to pull the overlay off, and citri strip for the remainder of the adhesive.

I will try that...

Napalm works too.

Cool! now where did I put that Napalm?????

I use a heatgun and paint scraper initially, then simple green to get rid of the extra adhesive, and follow that with the drill and wire brush.

The last step takes some time, but it looks nice and clean when you're done.

This is how i do it only with goof off instead of simple green.

I pre heat my oven to about 500 or 550 can't remember but basically as hot as it will go. Place the cp ( stripped of parts and wiring of course) in the oven for about 1min 45 or so. Don't leave in too long or the cpo will start to burn. Then with an oven mitt remove the cp and place it on the stove top or something stable that will not burn or melt. Use a scraper to pull up a corner until you can grab it. From here you can usually pull off large sections. The panel will stay hot enough to give you a few minutes which should be plenty of time to remove the entire cpo. A little adhesive residue will be left behind but not much. Usually one or two applications of goo gone and a little rubbing with a rag will get the residue off. You can have a cp stripped in about 25 mins. If the cp is not rusted it is possible to remove the old cpo without any damage to the paint on the cp which means all you have to do is give it a quick cleaning and the new cpo can be applied immediately.

One important note. If your old cpo is destroyed to the point where most of the lexan is gone and there are cracks everywhere this method may not save you much if any time. On the average aged cpo the method is the best I've ever tried.

I basicly do the same thing only with the grill. most of the cpo glue scrapes right off with a paint scraper. the rest i take off with a belt sander when sanding off the rust.

I just did this one last night:
index.php

Heat gun to take the overlay off.
Citristrip to remove adhesive
Wire wheel on drill to get it down to the bare metal

I use a SOY based stripper... works great... expensive as hell... but even Atari adhesive is no match for it.

Look class this is the 15 min strip process I am about to share. Remember men have died for this info.
1. 1st remove as much of the old CPO with a heat gun as you can
2. Go outside in a clear area and cover panel with thinner
3. Light thinner and let it burn, removing as much as you can with a putty knife may take a couple of times
4. Once burning is done and it is a fine ash sand
5. Clean good
6. Paint
7. Apply new over lay

This is the way we have done it for years. It takes about 15 to 20 min start to finish and make a like new panel to work with.
You have to use thinner, auto thinner is the best because it does not burn fast and is safe. Do not use GAS, very bad ideal.
This will not harm your metal and is very easy

Use Jasco stripper. Its cheap.

Spread it on, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrape off. Everything except the metal will come right off.

If its metal, fire up the grill, grab a beer and let 'er bake for an hour.

Crap flakes off after that. Completely amazing results. Then wire brush it to clean it up after. The rest of the options are completely unecessary.

If you have a parts cleaner around ( like the ones in auto repair shops) it takes it right off. I have one here in my shop and used it and that stuff came off real quick. No scrubbing at all.
