Street Fighter Turns 25

Old

For some reason, the original Street Fighter turning 25 doesn't effect me too much. I'll feel really old when Street Fighter 2 hits 25 years old.

Only 3 years dude...

Man, I wish Ken and Ryu would look their age. That would be cool. Like SNK did with Terry in Mark of the Wolves.

they kinda did that with Street Fighter III, no? Ryu definitely looks older than SFII, and SFIV takes place between II and III.

My friend and partner in crime, Ken Williams (former Sushi-X of EGM) was a real SF1 afficionado (in fact, he still is), even more so that SF2. He could do some real damage in that game. I've never seen consistent fireballs and dragon punches in SF1 until I saw him play. Pretty amazing.

.... Terry?

..... Yes?

Dude! Awesome! This may sound real geeky, but it's an honor to e-meet ya. :) I had a sub to EGM for several years back in the seminal days. Loved your tips section. Always was ready to see what ol' Trickman Terry had to say about the latest codes/tips.

Ha! That's awesome, we got EGM writers runnin' around here.

Does he have a cabinet? Is it the pneumatic button one?

A fireball or uppercut in SF1 can be a one hit knockout if well timed! If you can do the consistently you can easily beat the game.

Does he have any tips?

Ken is supposed to be an old dude now.

lol i remember that game. I thought it was pretty awesome. There's one level where there is like a huge wall of sand or something. My cousins and I used to marvel at the graphics on that section.. we would say that the graphics "looked 16 bit."

lol

Thanks for the kind words. Every once in a while I run into someone who remembers. Good to know it's still looked upon with positive nostalgic feelings. FYI, Ken and I now run Retroids dot com.

He has a SF2: C.E. cabinet (Dynamo). He goes over to Galloping Ghost every once in a while and plays their SF1. He learned on the pneumatic button one, I remember him telling me that.

Here's an article by Ken on the Street Fighter series as of last year:

Terry, is this just another joke?? Is the ROM in MAME?

Rumor Trivia -- did you know that the Flaming Jump Kick in the original Street Fighter is REAL? A prototype Street Fighter ROM revealed that before the hurricane kick was developed, Ryu and Ken could unleash a flaming jump kick, much like the cabinet art suggested. However, the move was even worse to use then the hurricane kick, and almost impossible to use during a battle. As most Street Fighter masters know, jumping in SF1 is a death sentence, and you have to jump to pull off the move. Thus, the switch to an easier, more stylized move, the hurricane kick. Hint: jump straight up and do a hurricane kick motion + kick at the height of your jump to execute the fabled Flaming Jump Kick. Like the other special moves, it removes 1/3 of the enemy's life bar if it connects. Don't believe me? Then the joke's on you.

Trickman: Wait are you the guy that published a code to play as simon Belmont in teenage mutant ninja turtles arcade on the nes?
