I've got a Street Fighter 2: World Warrior (jamma) pcb I picked up as working from a KLOVer about a year ago. Finally remembered it today and went to install it for the first time today. First time powering up there was no sound. Powered down, checked that boards were connected and powered back up. That time I got demo sound but as soon as I started a fight the sound went out. Occassionally I got static but nothing else. Volume pot didn't change anything. Checked voltages at the connector on the board and had 5.1 and 12.1 but still nothing for sound. Powered down again and back up and still nothing. What am I missing? Haven't looked up the manual yet (had to run to work tonight) to find the sound circuit on the board or where to test it. Should I be pushing the voltage up a bit? Any ideas? The only other treads I found with SF2 sound issues were only for the CPS2 version.

Thanks

Reseat the A and B boards... Sounds like a funky connection.

Reseated the boards as well as all of the chips. Still no sound. Screen looks great but there is absolutely no audio. A hint of static when I rotate the volume pot and the hum gets a little louder when it turns up. I threw in another jamma pcb (NBA Jam) and everything works fine on that one.

you try "wiping" the volume pot? I had to do that on my showcase with Alien vs. Predator. :)

just turn it all the way down and then up a few times to at least rule that out. I don't know dick about CPS1, is the volume pot attached to that, or are you using the same one for your NBA Jam? (unlikely, I think)

JAMMA edge dirty?

I don't believe this is CPS1. Aren't the CPS games in like a cartridge format? This is an actual 3-board Jamma pcb. I can get a pic of the board after work tonight if that would help. I did try "wiping" the volume pot at least once. Got some static but mostly just nothingness. The volume pot is attached to the board. The Jamma edge looks pretty clean. I was planning on giving it a cleaning but just never got around to it lastnight. Had another cab calling my name.

this is CPS1. CPS2 was the large plastic cartridge looking ones.

yeah, I never played around with a CPS1 setup before, but there's 3 interlocking boards on em, IMO I would separate all 3, and just give them all a bath.

I had a CPS2 board that I got off ebay from my Street Fighter Alpha 3, I didn't use it at first, I just replaced my Alpha 2 in the cab, well, like you said the sound was intermittent, it would work, and then it wouldn't. I just remembered this.

I took the whole A board apart and went over all of it with an alcohol soaked toothbrush. so I guess maybe you MIGHT have almost the same problem... just clean everything up like I said. :)

pop all your roms out too, clean the sockets/roms, and reseat them.

Right on. I guess I was just thinking of all CPS games as being the cartridge looking games. Well, good to know.

I will spend some time this week on it with alcohol (for the board and for me) :) and a toothbrush. From what I saw when I reseated everything it looked like everything was in fine shape but I did notice what looked like a little caked on dust on the exposed area on the pins of the roms. Also, there was like a melted black foam on a portion of the underside of the bottom board which I spent some time scraping off. I'm not sure what that was as it was like that when I got the game. Regardless though the boards will get a cleaning.

I appreciate the response and the explanation. I'll update this thread after I've given the boards a cleaning as to the outcome for archival purposes.

Thanks

I still maintain that the Japanese makes have a more sophisticated design, which means that when stuff messes up, it's very difficult to explain. it's certainly not like an old Midway board... they're a little more straightforward. :)

I hope the alcohol toothbrush works. obviously let it sit for a little while before you plug it back in. I use a soft bristle brush, shouldn't tear anything up.

I have run across CPS1 boards with bad caps in the audio section. That would also cause sound problems.

good catch. I'm a bit curious as to how this one's going to turn out. OT: I'm gonna assume with the heavy graphics redos though that it's not like a 2 rom swap on a WW board to make it CE or Turbo though right? (not trying to derail :()

Well, I am planning on getting to cleaning the board w/ alcohol in the next couple days and if that doesn't fix the issue I will hit the audio section's caps. Maybe even borrow my buddy's cap tester beforehand to see if I can get any insight into possible issues.

Thanks to all, and to all a good night.

I have the same board, with the same problem...

I always figured that it was a cap...

Alright, maybe I'll look at that first. So, seeing as I'm lacking any schematics for this board where might I find the audio section? :) I'm at work right now and not surprisingly the office firewall has blocked all the manual sites I would normally go to... ... it's only a matter of time before they get rid of this site too.

crap pic, but on the A board in the corner, you see the heatsink? typically on like ANY game board with amplifiers built in that's where your audio section is. that's the amp transistor. :) (or whatever the hell that's called)

the 4 caps, I think those are what you seek.

Fantastic, thank you.

See that light green area surrounding the audio amplifier? That whole section is the audio section... op-amps, and more. Replace all the little caps in there. Any one of them can affect the audio output.

Had the same problem with my SF II. Swapped out the Z80 processor on the sound board with a Z80B and fixed the problem.
