when I look at the KLOV listings for street fighter 2, it seems like theyre are a dozen or more listings. are these basically the same games in slightly different cabs, or what? which one is the basic 2, or is there one

They are a series of revisions including many hacks. The basic SFII is the SFII Champion Edition. The next revision, the one that allowed you to play the "bosses" such as M. Bison, was called Hyper Fighting. I believe the ones with the odd tick mark after the title (such as SFII' CE) are conversion kits.

As far as I am concerned from my playing days the only two real SFII boards were CE and HF though I did play some of the others in arcades as well.

I stand corrected. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page he linked to you will see a "legacy" listing. It shows WW preceeded CE, though I don't remember ever playing one...

It was only in the arcades for a little bit...i remember CE coming out not even a few months after WW did...

(readding_....KLOV says they both came out in 1991...that explains it!

Street Fighter II was remade about a dozen times. "The World Warrior" was the original, then came the "Champion Edition" which allows you to play as a boss character. Then SFII Turbo, Super SFII, Super SFII Turbo... and on.... and on.... and on....

The ones worth owning:

1. Street Fighter II: The world warrior for its original nostalgia
2. Street Fighter II: Champion Edition for the use of the bosses (And argueably the best version)
3. Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers for the ability to play with the 4 new characters including Cammy and her thong leotard. :)

Thats good to know. I never was much into the head to head fighting games (my son is now though) and whenever I see a SF or SF2 listing I have a hell of a time trying to figure out what Im looking at

Just get Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, if you are only going to buy one. Its got all of the characters and the ability to play the game fast or slow, it also has some features the older games don't such as the super meter and super finishes.

Didn't CE fix a some abusive issues?

Yeah, Capcom really milked the SFII name. After they got done with the Street Fighter II iterations, they went onto make a bunch of Super Street Fighter II games.

Puzzle Fighter II got the "II" designation despite being the first game.
Street Fighter III also got 3 iterations. New Generation, 2nd Impact, 3rd Strike.

As for the Alphas, I&II are the same game. But with updates.

Street Fighter IV Really takes place Sometime before SF II.... But after Alpha 3.

Crazy shit.

It balanced the chracters out a bit. The characters were really unbalanced and overpowered in WW. Anyone ever hit Blanka out of his ball roll attack? It would drain about 75% of his health! lol

Of the original CPS1 Street Fighter 2 games the best iteration would have to be the last. Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting. It gives Honda, Blanka and Chun Li some added moves and further balanced the game.

When did they pull out the Guile bullshit?

Don't forget the bootlegs. :) For CE alone you have 2 "rainbow" versions, "red wave", and a few others. If it's for your son and he doesn't have any particular nostalgia attached to a specific version, I'm with yzrider926, get a Super SFII Turbo board, it's got the most options as far as the SFII games go.

What Guile bullshit? Are you talking about "handcuffs" and other glitches?

The 15th year anniversary board has all the SF2's as well as the Alphas. Only place I've seen one is for $200 + shipping on epay. If your kid isn't too into SFII you can always pick up a regular SFII WW board for about $20 shipped. The cheapest one I bought was $17. SSFII Turbo boards usually go for over $100 easily. SSFII is a great game though, especially with all the characters you have to choose from.

... The shit where you throw a slow sonic boom and then go do a throw.

Anniversary is on the 18-1. Great deal for $200
