HI!
I've been working on a couple of SF2 boards that I got that were dead. I've got one back to perfect as it just had some bent under pins and needed some new roms chips. But the other one has been the problem!

After lots of testing with good parts I've got it down to just 2 chips. The PALs on the B board located at 11D and 12D. They are listed on the board as PAL16L8A. Once I determine which of the two or may be both are the issue, how do I go about replacing these? I have no idea how to burn a PAL and if you even can. Do I need to get working ones from another SF2 board? I checked jammarcade.net to see if there was a dump but didn't find anything for those chips there, only the PAL at 1A.

I've hit a wall here, can anyone help me out??

These PALs have a code on them. You can go to jammarcade.net under the PLD section and search for "cps" (instead of "street fighter"). There is a bunch of them there…

The first thing to do is identify which one need to be programmed…

Thanks! They are both labeled the same but would imagine they are programmed differently. So even though they are on the B board I still search CPS?

They should have a stamp on them in addition to the type of IC (i.e. a PAL device). Can you post a pic?

I would first identify them by the stamp and then search in the CPS section for them.

I found the one at slot 11d on there but not the other. But it still begs the question, can I program replacements myself, buy them or do I need existing from another board?
Good chips

They are :

ROM_LOAD( "iob1.12d", 0x0000, 0x0117, CRC(3abc0700) SHA1(973043aa46ec6d5d1db20dc9d5937005a0f9f6ae) )
ROM_LOAD( "bprg1.11d", 0x0000, 0x0117, CRC(31793da7) SHA1(400fa7ac517421c978c1ee7773c30b9ed0c5d3f3) )

on a Street Fighter II CE

So download and burn these JED in a GAL16V8:

This is very helpful info Caius. Im looking to burn mega man Pal/Gals for the b board as well. Caius I have the GQ-4x which I don't believe burns these, what programmer would you recommend to do these, with a reasonable price of course? Also will the Gal16v8 work for the c board pal chips as well or are they standard (no need to program) between all c boards that have them?

Awesome thanks!! Do I burn these the same way I would an eprom, if my burner can burns these that is. And is erasing them done through the burner as well as they don't have a UV window?

Correct.First erase the chip via programmer software then load the .JED into buffer, lastly program the chip.

IIRC on the TL-866, you need to uncheck the "encrypt" box in order to burn correctly.

The TL-866 is cheap and does a lot more than EPROMs, including GALs, IC and RAM testing. It is a good hardware to have.

It's been a while but I *think* the same rules apply for PALs on the C board: they are stamped, so you need to identify them and look for them on the PLD archive on jammarcade.net.

According to the GQ-4 device list, GALs are not supported.Anyway, you could buy a TL866CS (or TL866A with ISP feature), they both can program GAL16V8 and are cheap.

PAL on CPS1 C-BOARD can be replaced as well with programmed GAL16V8 supposing they have been dumped.

Thanks guys. I have been meaning to look into this for a while but I put it on the back burner. If the OP didn't post this thread i problably would have forgotten about it for some time.

Well then you're welcome and this is a two bird with one stone kinda post then!

Well apparently the burner I borrowed is a gq3x or something to that sort and doesn't support the gal16vb. It does have a bunch of other gals listed though. I can't seem to find an equivalent for the burner to read. Any ideas or am I pooched at this point?
