Street Fighter 2 - Champion Edition Restore (another)

Hey Guys,
Here is my first post and wanted to say hello. My girlfriend picked me up a Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition Cabinet with working game for my Birthday. My Jaw dropped.

The game cabinet hadn't been cleaned or taken care of for years. We spent some time taking the glass off and cleaning as much as we could given what we had at the house. Replaced the Marquee lights with some low power soft blue halogens. We fixed the screen image on the tube (it was a little off centered, wrong contrast and not sharp). The image is still not crisp, but I think it does give it a bit of a vintage feel. I canned air blew out most of the PCB board and blew out the JAMMA mainboard as well. Blew out the dust in the PSU and anything else I felt and saw that collected nearly 20 years of dust. Put the game at Level 5 Difficulty and Turned On Free Play via the Dip switches.

I am not sure what type of Dynamo case that it is but its not an original SF2 cab. I think it was for some other game and they just kinda threw in the buttons (notice the angle) to make it fit like a SF2 game.

Here is my list which I plan to do for this Cabinet.

1) Change the faded Bezel, Add CE Side Stickers
2) Replace the bizarre Control Panel to more a traditional style CP Layout
3) Replace all the Buttons and Joystick (New ones are on their way via LizardLick)
4) Replace Put on some new T-molding
5) Fix any imperfections in the cabinet (busted wood etc)
6) Put in Right Side speaker on the right side (wires are there but only has left side now)
7) Coin Door locks

That should keep me busy for a bit. I was cleaning the bottom of the unit when I saw some junk wire and candy wrappers but I also found THE ORIGINAL INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR SF2 CE!!!
I was sooo stoked. I can't believe it was just sitting there at the bottom.

Wish me luck. I will add to this post for my progress.

PS. If anyone can give me pointers what what to do about that control panel, I am all ears. I was thinking of cutting out some sheet metal and doing the work myself. User on another forum mentioned he just epoxied the new CP to the CP hinge etc.

Welcome to KLOV and what an awesome girlfriend to buy you a cab! :) I'm not certain what exact model Dynamo cab that is, but it may be easier to just post a wanted to buy message in the wanted section of the forum. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a panel that will swap right into that cab and be set with a much better SF2 layout.

Congrats on your pickup, and on having a super-cool girlfriend.

The cabinet is a Dynamo HS-9. There's very little official Dynamo information on it, but it does have the Dynamo name-plate. I tried to find info on it when I picked up an SF2 in one recently.

Here was that thread: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=185595

And here was my restoration of the same cabinet: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=188644

Regarding your control panel, doing some searches on these forums will show plenty of detailed CP restorations that folks have done. Sometime the holes are filled and sanded, then new one's drilled. I'm not 100% sure if the dimensions are the same, but if so you can probably get a replacement corner-cut dynamo control panel with the standard SF2 button layout.

Cheers! Jeff

Congrats and welcome to the addiction. That monitor loos like it cuold benefit from a rejuve or capkit. Don't worry if you don't know what that means you will soon enough.

Congrats and welcome to the forum.

Yeah Jeff's HF machine is one of the nicest I've seen. If I had a HS-9 I would do the same color scheme.

can i borrow your GF? Any time I come home with a cab, it's like a kid with a puppy lol

Update - New Champion Edition Bezel, CP Overlay (for new CP) and Side art is ordered and will be shipped out soon.

Now to see if I can find a cp with the style I want or if I can fabricate something.

I am going to attempt to do some bondo and fill in the predrilled holes in my current CP over the weekend.

What Grit should I be sanding with if I want to get a nice smooth surface? What grit should I be using to polish off the current control panel to get any rust etc off this unit?

Thanks for the help guys.

Update!

Happ Competition Joysticks are here (red bat tops) with 1 and 2 player select buttons and a set of 4 Blue, 4 Red, and 4 White buttons all here care of Lizard Lick.

Welcome to the KLOV family. Great progress already on the restoration. My girl won't even let me bring home another PCB. Lol. At least I know how to fix that. Santa has her ring on the way. Good luck. MOst important thing is to have fun through out the progress. And take lots of pictures. Peace.

I'm working on one of the big blue Capcom cabs right now putting a SF2 Alpha in it. Anyone have an idea where I could get a marquee for it that big? It needs to be 27" wide and about 15" high. Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

I am gettting my work done through an eBay seller. He does his own stuff but you can contact him through here. I actually am getting a custom CPO done as you can see my joystick hole is centered with the horizontal center of the top row of buttons.

More Painting pics.

I left the CP rest alone. It would be a major paint to take that off and repair it as they drove nails deep into the particle board. Plus you can never see the red cp rest when the cp is in place for gameplay.

Last coat of paint.

Finished with T-Molding. Now there are a few spots where the paint peeled off. I can fix that later.
