I picked up a real cheap SF2 CE with everything working except the buttons were old and shaky. They all worked but a little unresponsive and some would stick. So I bought all new buttons, 2 joysticks, a full JAMMA harness, and the SF2 kick harness(from Jammaboards.com)

For some reason I can't seem to get some of the buttons to work at all. I followed the JAMMA pin outs but only certain wires work. Even on the kick harness not all buttons work. In fact the instructions give what colors goto what kick buttons but the ones that actually work don't match these.

Here is what works:
1 Player Start
2 Player Start
1 Player Up, Down, Left, Right
2 Player Up, Down, Left, Right
Player 1 Button 2
1 Player short(wrong color)
1 Player forward(wrong color)
Player 2 Button 3
2 player Short(wrong color)
2 Player Forward(wrong color)

I should be able to use a generic JAMMA harness right?

Looking at it again you need to check you 10 pin connector the colors are.
black==grnd
black==grnd
purple=1 player kick
grey==1 player kick med.
white=1 player kick hard
n/c
orange=2 player kick
green==2 player kick med.
blue===2 player kick hard
n/c

All of the Pinouts on the JAMMA Harness and the Kick Harness match up with the two I bought. Except a few.

What is N/C??

The only difference on the JAMMA Harness I bought is...
Pin 11/M = Optional P1/P2 Button 6
Pin 25/CC = Optional P1/P2 Button 4
Pin 26/DD = Optional P1/P2 Button 5

Where those are all listed as N/C in the SF2 Manual.

I am still looking at what would and would not work if the connector was reversed. so far it looks like 2 of the one player buttons would work the 2player kick and kick med. kick hard would not. It looks like the same with the 2player. Only kick and kick med. would work.

Them there is for extra players and/or buttons. the n.c. you are seeing is usually nothing connected N.C. or no connections. The pionts you really need to pay attention to are the connectors and the following pins on the jamma connect.
Z==22
a==23
b==24
if you put ground to these pins it should do the task. If that works then check wiring.
One at a time! and only temporary.

There definitely seems to be a grounding issue or something. In order to get the monitor to hold a stable image I had to use one of the unused ground wires and tie that into the monitor's ground cable. If I remove it the image is all garbled.

After testing the pins you suggested I could only get BB/24 to work by touching the wires to the ground on the Power Supply.

There are two grounds on the Power Supply but only one is connected to the JAMMA Harness. Should I split this cable and connect both?

I tried an unused ground wire and connected it directly to the video ground and it worked. So it seems the video ground is no good.

So what now?? I guess it is possible some of the button wires are just no good maybe?

So after testing everything to a good ground here are the buttons that are not working.

22/Z = P1/P2 Light Punch
23/AA = P1/P2 Medium Punch

The following do not work on the Kick Harness

Player 1 Heavy Kick
Player 2 Heavy Kick

Any coincidences going on here?

It looks like you need to check the 10 pin connector that would cause most of the problems you are having. It is acting like it is in backwards. I will look a schematics again but if I remember right it would cause the heavy kicks not to work.

The connector is probably backwards check out pg13/pg17 of pdf file of the manual and see how to correctly attach the connector. If it is backwards the heavy kick will not work.

Ok I'll double check and let you know. But that still wouldn't explain the buttons on the JAMMA Harness not working though. I tested these with and without the Kick Harness plugged in and no dice either way.

check the buttons with ohm meter (while power off) to make shure they are working proper and clean 44 pin connector with a "pink pet" type of eraser. May of may not work, woth a shot though.

Where is the other ground wire going????

I woud look into this also as the buttons work from the ground.

The kick harness was indeed in backwards and after putting it in the correct way all 6 kick buttons work.

I hooked up my old JAMMA Harness and the other 4 buttons that weren't working with the new JAMMA harness still didn't work.

So is it safe to assume there is an issue with the PCB?? I don't know where to begin investigating. I plan on buying a hyper fighting PCB soon anyways so I'm wondering if I'll have the same issue with that PCB.

No I really don't think it is a pcb problem, other than the inputs. I would check all 4 grounds and ohm the buttons. One side or other should be grounded if not there is a problem.
