Strange Spy Hunter issue with missiles

Picked up a Spy Hunter last week. The game works great except for missiles.

Once you pick them up, any button action except the pedal also launches a missile, as does turning the wheel, so pretty much all 4 get fired in succession (the missile trigger does function however).

It also prevents entering any high score other than "AAA". Turn wheel, missile launches.

Not really sure what to start with for troubleshooting, seems like an odd problem.

Is the missile button stuck?

Something is grounding the missile button and in the way you have described it is shorted to a ground or metal part. Any thing you move will cause the missile to fire. Hook up an ohm meter to the pins that the fire button goes to, with all power off and unplugged from wall, move the wheel with the meter in beep mode you will most likely hear that meter beeping when you do just about anything. Then start to pull connectors until only the missile button makes the meter beep.

Awesome, thank you! Didn't want to start taking anything apart without any idea at all. Weekend project is lined up. :)
