Could it perhaps be for...

1) a large topper of some sort?

2) one of those second monitor kits?

3) something installed on the prototype army trainer?

4) something on a Red Baron cabinet?

Just some ideas

You line up a few BZ's next to one another, about three feet apart, put a pole in them and you hang your clothes out to dry while playing. It's obvious these were all from a laundromat...

:)

I'm guessing a second monitor on top since it is tough to see what is happening on the screen when the "player" is playing the game.

I guess I have number 5. I have a Battlezone in storage with those same holes and I have always wondered about why they are there.

you are correct sir, as my memory has it I remember something (bracket) secures on the sides. It's a good guess though.

Could it maybe have been a service light sign? You turn the light on with a switch on the game someplace and waiting staff will come by and get you a drink etc. so you don't have to quit playing the game.

My BZ is 5300 and doesn't have them.

My factory sticker says;
Atari - A Warner Communications Company
Model 225XX
Serial 1374

It has been mounted with something before. Notice the screw holes on the upper left and scuff mark around the large hole. There are no thru-holes into the cabinet for wiring or any evidence of something heavy sitting on top. Monitor, maybe. Marquee, maybe. Ooh, maybe it was a Head Mounted Display for military training... cool.

Heh, yours is Serial #2212 and mine is #2211. It's odd that out of 13,000+ made, ours came off the assembly line right next to each other.
