Storing games at a friends place - ready to get them back

So I needed to store some machines over at a friends place. I have about 12 or so in the garage. They have been there not quite a year. He had recently been asking me when I was going to move them since he could use the space. I now have room for all of them and told him I would pick them up and asked if he would help. He said he would (I work with this guy).
Anyway, now he is wanting me to leave some of the machines since he and his kids play them. I do have some projects he has been keeping. I said fine, I will get the project games out and the duplicate games (2 Heavy Barrels (both work - could use cap kits and one has a joystick issue) and 2 Vindicators (one works and one doesn't) - well, it does but not in the current configuration and doesn't look as nice as the other that I worked on).

I explained that I will need to bring machines back to my place so I can do monitor work on them, etc., but would only do that one at a time so he could still play them. I also offered to get the one in a non-Data East cab (has the rounded marquee like Robocop/Bad Dudes) re-capped and would let him have it since I know he likes HB and I really only need one. That HB is a conversion in a Sega/Gremlin cab - looks like a Frogger or Astro Blaster cab - wood grain front with painted black sides.

He wants to hang on to the working Vindicators, a Heavy Barrel (fully working but needs cap kit - not the Data East cab one that has rotary JS problem). 2-player Super Off-Road, Mechanized Attack, Final Fight. I think that is it. Have to look at my list.

I am cool with all that (and he said I could take them all if I wanted). Just seemed weird that he wanted them out and now wants to hang onto them. He is a good friend so no big deal.

Any recommendations?

12 games is an awful lot to ask a buddy to store for free. I would toss the guy 1 or 2 games and if he wanted you to leave another one there for a month or two it's the least you can do. A storage unit to fit 12 games would have probably cost you 75/month.

Well, going down from 12 games to 5 in there would be a massive difference.

Are you going to let him keep them, or is it still considered storage?

I can see that if you have doubles, he would like to keep the working one of the pair.
I can also see that if you have doubles, YOU would like to hang onto the better looking of the pair.

Can you just let him know that, without hurting anybody's feelings? Just tell him you'd like the better looking one of the pair and that you'll fix the other one for him to 'hang on to'.

12 games in his garage? Damn, how big is his garage?

You owe him big time for storing that many for that long. I think you should outright give him 1-2 games, then take the rest.

12 games...wow. I would feel I was pushing things asking someone to store 2 games.

You should GIVE him two games of his choice and remove all of the rest. Thank him profusely. Space is money.

Why does he want two vindicators? I think giving him a couple of games especially the ones that you have doubles of would be the right thing to do but if he wants a couple of games that you weren't looking at giving away then that's a bit too much to ask. He did agree to store the games for you as a favor after all. Does he want all the games you mentioned for "keeps" or for you to leave them there for storage.

Was there a question anywhere in there? Your friend stored 12 games for you and wants you to leave a few that his family enjoys playing. Sounds like a win-win to me, what's the problem? I'd tell him you'll leave them until you want them yourself or want to dispose of them and leave it at that...

Take the ones you both agree to remove from the garage.

That leaves Vindicators, Heavy Barrel, Super Off-Road, Mechanized Attack, & Final Fight

Tell him to pick 2 to keep for his trouble. Then, either offer to sell him the other 3 CHEAP, or remove them as well. Thank him again. Buy him some beer(s).

I have an Arkanoid in a friend's house right now, & they play it occassionally. The deal is if/when I want it back, I can take it. But that's just one game, and it works. I can't imagine putting 12 project games in someone else's garage.

I had two working games at a relatives house for over a year. I had forgotten about them. When I realized that I had been using their house for free storage for that long I sold them both games for $100 and called it a day.

Ask yourself this - if he parked a car in your garage for almost a year would you expect to be compensated for it in some way (night of drinks on him, dinner for the fam, etc)? This is no different.

He stored 12 machines for me (as I recall - have a list of the ones that I stored at his place). I have also done some video production work for him and his band, loaned him some audio equipment, etc., so not just free loading on the storage :). Friends help each other out. He offered up the garage because he wasn't using it for anything other than a lawn mower and such and he and his kids could play the games and I needed to find a new place for the machines temporarily (that turned into almost a year). I am all for the machines getting some use rather than having them in storage not being played and just sitting.

He doesn't want two of any of the games - I just have a couple of duplicates. He just wants to hang onto some of the working games for a while. I am sort of ready to have some of those working games where I can play them (and most need cap kits). That is the only minor issue I have is that I would like to play them at my place. They will be brought over so I can do the cap kits and repairs - at least that is what I am thinking now. I would rather do any work where I have all of my stuff in case there is another issue. One things sometimes turns into another when doing any project. He lives about 15 miles from me so not far but not close if if need something I don't have.

I told him he could have or keep as long as he wanted the second HB and I would cap the monitor - it does need that.

The other games I am really not willing to part with forever and not really sure he would really want to keep as his own. He was fine with me taking them all back if I wanted but if he and his kids are playing them then that is great - I just finally have enough room to get some work done on them and store them while I am in the fix-up process.

The only question was implied - like what else should I do. Sounds like I am on the right track. Thanks for the feedback. Just wanted a 'sanity check'.

They weren't all projects. I think about 4-5 were/are and the rest work. :)

Think I will make a multi out of one of the project cabs and give that to him as well. Probably Warp Warp. That cabinet is in decent shape and it is a bit smaller than some of the other cabinets so won't take up so much space at his place.
