Still looking to get a Multicade. Opinions please.

The arcadeshop cocktail is priced right but a friend of mine got one and he was disappointed with a few things. It's built out of mdf not real wood and when he received it, it had a big chunk out of it. Plus he didn't care for the fake wood grain and the control panels are a little small. Also, I heard from a tech at Happs that the vision pro is a lower end monitor that tends to have a few problems.
But at that price you can't expect it to have the best of everything. Still a good deal, especially when compared to the $3200 this other place is asking.

Lets take this one point at a time. "Real Arcade cabinets" tend to be made of MDF and not WOOD. Not all of them, but i'd venture to guess the MAJORITY of them are made of MDF...and certainly a minority are made of "real wood".

The "fake wood grain" is also a standard affair on cocktail cabinets and has been so for about 30 years.

The control panels are approximately the same size as the control panels of a standard Midway type cocktail table.

Finally, the VisionPro 19" monitor from HAPP is a standard drop-in replacement monitor. It is a good monitor, no better or worse than others. I have no idea why a HAPP tech would say their own monitor was a lower quality monitor when that is not the fact...i'd buy one before I bought a new Wells Gardner, that is for sure. My only guess would be he was trying to sell you the more expensive monitor.

Bottom line is that the arcadeship cabinet is a standard arcade cocktail cabinet made of standard arcade cocktail cabinet material with a standard arcade cocktail cabinet size and shape holding a standard resolution QUALITY monitor...

PS: If your friend had contacted arcadeshop about the piece missing from his cocktail (chunk of MDF), they'd have likely replaced the part or cabinet.

I agree....

I've built about 40 of these things into multicades and have never had a problem and been happy with each one. The only thing I would caution anyone is to buy the glass top they sell, as the original glass size is about an eight of an inch too big, but other than that, it's fine.

Now, if they made a cocktail version that didn't have that giant hole for a PC-type power supply, and instead had a hole on the bottom for the power cord and a power switch, it would be perfect. I hate putting in a switcher and needing to cover that hole every time....

And as to Vision Pro's, I've never had a problem with one. They look great and are one of the easiest monitors to drop into a game and hook right up.

Word. (I've got a couple of WG 4600's that I need to rip out, set on fire, and replace with some new VisionPros.)

MDF doesn't make an arcade cabinet "REAL". The only reason they started using it was because it is cheaper. From a quality standpoint there isn't a single benefit in using it. It chips, it's susceptible to water damage, and it is heavier than real wood. The midway cocktail, which incidentally the arcadeshop cabinet is modeled after was made of "Real wood".

I don't know of anyone who thinks fake wood grain looks better than real wood grain. Once again the only reason they used it was because of costs.

The control panels are exactly the same size as the mspacman control panels, and they are small. But think about, how many buttons were needed for mspacman? They didn't need a bigger control panel, but when you start adding buttons to a control panel of that size it gets crowded pretty quick.

Just because you had good luck with a few vision pros does not mean that the monitor is not without problems. I'm guessing the tech at Happs has a little more experience with the monitor and can give a better opinion on the quality of the monitor. And he has no reason to lie, I wasn't looking to buy a monitor, and he is a tech, not a salesman.

Only if you have low standards.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the arcadeshop cabinet is overpriced, but I do think you get what you pay for.

Heh.. the 'real wood' debate.. Try not to forget, even a so called 'real wood' cabinet is still PLYWOOD. Not solid. Most people want a cabinet to fit in with their memories and bring the nostalgia so the fake wood grain works fine.. I don't want my arcade cabinet to look like a piece of furniture any more than I want my furniture to look like an arcade cabinet.. it's a personal choice so don't put it down based on your opinion.. it's not a fault or bad quality thing, it's an aesthetic thing that you may or may not like.

As for the vision pro monitors, i've used lots of them with no issues.. listen to folks that use them, not hearsay. It's the buyers choice to buy an expensive monitor or not but if you think any monitor is bulletproof you've got a lot to learn

Don't confuse personal likes/dislikes with Quality and the perception of getting what you pay for.

As for the size of the control panels, if you want a franken panel then go for it

So is my Q*Bert made of MDF not real anymore? I think the point was if the original game was made of a particular type of material, and the repro version uses a different one, that's not correct. It has nothing to do with MDF and Plywood being real or not real, different games came in different cabinets. They're all real, I can reach out and touch them

MDF or "particle board" is a whole lot easier to repair also. If games were made out of 3/4 inch plywood, you would be able to see every little scratch it ever got! If you could see half the bondo, and "glue patch" on a lot of the classic games, it would make you sick. Most kids back in the day, did not care about demolishing, scratching, and vandalizing games. The plain, and simple fact is that most games are made out of MDF. I am sure that in time, some people will make a custom, high quality plywood cabinet for their most cherished games.

Nevermind...I see popcorrin has a complete handle on things...and we all don't know shit.

How about you come back when YOU have experience with VisionPro monitors and then PERHAPS your opinion might be worth posting.

Last I checked the Centipede cabinet I have is MDF...and I do believe the Bad Dudes cabinet I had was MDF...and the Atari cocktail cabinet I have is...oh...plywood...I guess that is real wood...just thin and glued together...but you knew that as, evidently, you know it all.
