The handles on my Chexx hockey have because increasingly sticky over the years. Do they come off the rods and what would be a good option of something to soak them in to remove the stickiness?

I've always just replaced them. I usually slice them with a razor and
peel them off like a banana. Never been able to get them off whole.

I wonder if its similar to how old steering wheels from the 70s get sticky, or the plastic coating on swing set chains. This is caused by uv, temperature and aging. Maybe alcohol or wd40 and magic eraser to try to remove the bad layer.

I think that stickiness is just the rubber breaking down, from hand oils, age, etc.

You may not be able to clean them. Might be better off just replacing them.

Yep. It's the dreaded lipid damage. You can try some cleaners.

Something that strips oil would be best - like Windex. Then go over it with a car wax to try to seal it.

But with the car wax, it will be a little slick.

It's worth a try.
