Steve Wiebe Performing Live in Chicago! Jan 15th!

The DK101 class helped me get past the third elevators pretty regularly now. My high score went from 107k to 175k in one day. The entire evening was a ton of fun and Steve and Jim Zespy are great guys. Steve and I went to the Bears/Seahawks playoff game on Sunday as he is a big Seattle fan. Too bad for him the Seahawks sent their b-team. We had lots of fun doing the Chicago thing though.

Think I ran into your wife. We started talking and then mine walked up and they went into the "my husband does this....my husband does that" thing. I loved listening to the two of them talk about us dragging them around to picks and arcade stuff. But as long as they let us have fun....oh well.

Steve is a great guy. Really quiet, most of the time. Once you get him on stories about college or sports, he'll talk for days. :)

Cowbell - That's awesome you got to hang with him. I dragged him out to a Sounders match once here in Seattle, and now he wants season tix (which are next to impossible) or to steal one of my extras for every match...lol.

All things considered, classes aren't really neccessary to figure out DK. I'm not saying it's easy, by any means. And having someone show you the ropes does help. But once I got my machine 3 yrs ago (twas my first), I worked on it and figured it out myself in a couple of weeks. The toughest part about the game is staying focused for so long with all of the random elements coming at you. I generally take a safer approach and avoid point pressing, going for bonus as the bulk of my scoring (usually from L4 and up). But even when you have your routes and escapes figured, there's still a "feel" and luck factor that comes into play. Those are reacting to wild barrels and to errant or aggro fireballs. Nothing is 100%, even when you get yourself going and you think everything is figured out. It takes one bad move to ruin your entire game.

Still workin at it myself. 661K is my best. I stay in touch with him, as he wants me to get my first killscreen as bad as I do...lol!

All in all, sounds like a real treat for all you mid-westerners! If you've got some vacation time this summer, come see Steve and the rest of us goofy NW KLOV'ers and collectors at the NW Pinball & Gameroom Show in June!!! :D

Yep, that was her. She remembers that. I was there with her and one of my sons. She loved comparing notes with another arcade widow.

Steve can definitely talk sports all day long. It was fun to hear his take on things and get him riled up about the Seahawks.

That was a great game! I cannot wait to go back on Sunday and beat the Packers!

Don't know if anyone's interested but I posted the video I shot from my cell of Steve's demo in the noon class. Please pardon my annoying cackling and the Smash TV I sat next to if you do watch it.

Some of the things he showed us just made us shake our heads in the audience. The point pressing in the top right of the elevators when the spring goes by was one of them. The other big one that made me laugh out loud was toward the top of the barrel level, jumping a set of barrels for 300-800 points and then climbing down the ladder to jump them again. It was crazy how many points he was coming up with.

That sounds nuts. I should probably get some more experience under my belt before I try that stuff :)

By the way, do you all follow the level patterns. I find I do better when I don't follow them, but it could be because I don't fully understand them yet.

That video was awesome. Thanks for posting.

What was he doing on the elevator scene at the top right to point press that everybody was laughing about?

It's getting points off the fireball on the top right. Very similar to jumping by Kong's leg on the rivet board. You jump and then at the peak of your jump you press the joystick right (or left) and release before you land. You just repeat that.

Right. There's a sweet spot there where you are either getting points when the spring goes by or when the fireball is at the top. Guaranteed safe points. Brilliant!

The guy who has the top score for DK in MAME (Dean Saglio) rejumps groups of barrels quite a bit. He stands below Kong, gets them to group in 2, jumps them, then climbs down to the next row and jumps them again. If he can get a 3rd one in the group, he might even go down one more row and jump a 3rd time (depending on where the fireballs are). You only get 500 points for jumping 3 or more though, even though it shows 800. That's the best way to squeeze out extra points on the barrel board. The timer counts down 100 for each barrel Kong releases, so if you can double or triple them up, it really adds up quick.

He was jumping the springs as they were falling as well as jumping the fire when it got close.

Well, I've gone from 107k as my high score before the DK101 class to 218k after the class. It was really only a matter of seeing him play and hearing one important thing. Something clicked when he said that once you master the third elevator, it doesn't get any harder after that. I'm pretty sure I knew that but hearing him verbalize it made it sound simple. He also mentioned that he has a Double Donkey Kong boardset that he can set to unlimited jumpmen which allows him to practice certain boards. Brilliant! I have a DDK, set it to unlimited, and practiced the third elevator over and over until I can get through it 9 times out of 10. Next goal, 250k.

See, now I have to get a Double Donkey Kong boardset. Which means I need to get another DK Junior board because I don't want to mess with the one I have. Man, this is an expensive hobby. :)
