Steel Buildings for workshop... anybody got one? Opinions???

Does anybody have a separate steel building for shop/storage/arcade/etc.???

Just browsing and found this:
http://metalbuildingdepot.com/

I am thinking of getting a separate building for my shop/woodworking/storage (NOT for a separate gameroom). That would free up the garage so I could put about 20 more working machines in there.

If I go barebones with it (no insulation, no add-ons) I could get the smallest one (25'x40') for around $10K and it would be more than enough room for my shop/storage needs.

Has anybody looked into these, or if you have one, any insight you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be doing the same within next few years. Sad part is, just a few years ago they were about 1/2 the porice :(

You can get one of those metal carports with options. They make them to where you can get a large fully enclosed one for around $3k. You can even get an entry door integrated. If you pour your own concrete slab, you'd be getting off pretty cheap and it would be done in a day.

How big can the metal carport get? I have space for somthing like 25'x50'.

Do you know if a concrete slab required for the large steel buildings?

I think those prices are just for the materials and delivery... no actual construction...

You also have to account for the slab...

You can get the carport ones big enough for an RV for sure. I'm been thinking about getting one for my tractor.

You can find people that sell and install them locally. Here is just some random site I found. See the very bottom where they talk about converting a carport to a shop/garage.

Edit: Their garage kit gallery looks cool... Might have to check into their kits. :) http://www.absoluterv.com/garage_gallery.htm

if memory serves right, building one as "unfinished" with no drywall would qualify it as a greenhouse structure and not add to your property taxes. like I said, if memory serves me right.

25x50?!? Jeez man, do you realize that is bigger than most people's house footprint?

I didn't really pay attention to your dimensions in the first post. That $10k figure is MOST DEFINITELY just for the raw materials.

What use could you possibly have for that big of a building?

The slab is extra. Depending on the model/company some of the steel buildings require a slab and some don't. If you don't want to put a slab down initially, then check into barns. Most ag buildings don't have slabs. Just remember if you add one overte the fact, you will lose 5-6 inches inside unless you dismantle and reassemble or dig out the inside.

My neighbor has a huge fully enclosed one for his 5th wheel camper. It has a storage loft in it too.

Slab that size your probably looking at 10k more on top of price unless u sub it out yourself.

In the Midwest he could have that size of slab done for around 5K, would be a floating Slab on Grade, no foundations or thickened edges.

I was thinking it was a bit small myself. I'm looking at doing something in a 30x60 That way I would have room for my hot rod etc. I'd also need high ceilings so I could put in a 4 post lift.

check out menards. I am getting a 30X48 kit delivered for 8500.00 concrete will be about 2500.00

You have to build it yourself?

Looked it up and there ain't no Menards down here in the Land of Dixie... bummer.

Also note, if you don't go with a slab, you will probably need to pour footers for the building to rest on - especially for a larger structure, you can't just sit it on the ground, it's got to have something to take the load.

You can get a one or two stall garage package from Menards / Home depot alot cheaper..

pour a slab.. build it yourself...

and remember... steel building will be very cold in winter... build a garage package and you have stud walls already to insulate if you want... with a pole barn or steel building.. you have to end up building stud walls any walls to insulate and put an interior wall up...

adding to the costs....
