and it was a waste of time. i sanded the back piece of MDF down for repainting. sanded it down, sprayed two coats on, looks horrible. at this point i need to decide if iwant to bondo the entire door or just buy a new piece of MDF and cut it out then paint it. i sprayed this panel today and apparently when you sand it down enough, it takes small chips out of the board. and i SOOO dont wanna have to sand smooth an entire panel in bondo. my question though, is if anyone ever used real wood and which kind? i have tried to paint pine wood before and it didnt go over well either. seems like some places in the wood were shiny and others werent.

What grit sandpaper are you using, what cabinet are you working on, what type of paint are you using, and what type of sprayer are you using? MDF is usually the standard in restorations.

Are the doors MDF or particle board?
The Joust cab that I am currently working on has particle board back doors.
There is no smooth surface to them just lots of craters.
MDF has a nice smooth paintable surface.
Pics would help.
If they are MDF then you might have over sanded them past the top layer.
If they are particle board then they will never have a smooth surface unless you do major filling and sanding.
I just paint them flat black and they look pretty good.
Semi gloss looks bad with all the imperfections imo.

well i think this is MDF, its from a gyruss cabinet. i sanded it down with 80 grit at first because over the years it had really taken a beating. ppl had carved initials in it and scratches allll over it, deep at that. so i sanded it till i thought it was smooth, but then when i painted it with can spray, it looked terrible, had all these small craters showing thru. now the other side, the side that faced inward is super smooth and no scratches, i have thought about reversing this door and using the smooth side for the outside.

If it is/was all frayed like that, then it would have been easier to make an exact repro out of new material. Make good use of primer also. If using new MDF, there's another product you may want to check out - Zinsser sealer coat. It will soak into the MDF or particle board. I can be a finish coat, but is really used, a few coats, to soak in before the primer coat. I got it at Lowes I think:
