So I received a Starship 1 from @Crans the other week and plan on doing a complete restoration of the cabinet. This is neither my first machine nor is it my first bronze age title, but this will be the first time I take on any sort of cabinet work with a game.

Before I try it myself, might anyone know who'd have (or who'd be willing to reproduce) the side art for this game? I've noticed that there seems to be a lack of artwork available for Bronze Age games in general.

It would be pretty awesome to find spare originals or reproductions of the cardboard cutouts for around the monitor.

I did some repairs on the game board and had my Starship running until the monitor went out. Need to pull that and go through it.

What condition is your game in?

Starship 1 sideart was painted \ screen printed IIRC. I'd love to be proved wrong but there's no market for anyone to reproduce the art, no demand for it.

The condition is not too bad, mainly just some gouges along the bottom and sides of the cabinet along with some flaking paint.

Interestingly enough, the side art is painted on one side of the game and printed to vinyl on the other. Not sure if Atari made it that way from the factory or what…

I've considered just touching it up with and leaving it as is, though I'd prefer the look of a "fresh" new game. The process of scanning the art doesn't seem to terrible, so it'd be more or less just a question of who I could have correct and print it for me.

Galloping Ghost Reproductions is localish, he can scan, color correct and print. Does good work.

Interesting one side is a decal, would not have been that way from the factory. Means someone in Cali scanned the machine at one time. Might be worth pursuing...

Mine appears to have it printed on vinyl on both sides of the cabinet. From the pictures your game doesn't look that bad. You could probably fix the bottom. Paint and feather in the black, and touch up the artwork. If you get someone good at matching colors it can be hard to tell unless right on top. Not at all when sitting next to another game. When my daughter comes home from school I usually get her to touch up games. Have backlog but she does a good job. Find an art student and worth paying if you find a good one.

Nice pickup! awesome to see someone giving it a full restore. You're right, side art for these early games is tough to come by. You might want to check with This Old Game or Phoenix Arcade if they don't have it, sometimes they're open to reproducing.

Took a look at mine and verified it's painted on both sides, same as other Atari games of the time. Someone must have done a run of side-art for repairs at some time.

Good question, what was the first Atari game to use vinyl side art versus painting \ silk screening? I dont know the answer myself.

I'd leave it alone. That game has had a hell of a life, and it's a minor miracle that it's still intact at all.

Chicks dig scars.
^This. Not the chicks dig scars as much as perfection is the enemy of good enough. You can try to make this perfect and completely botch it. Right now, it has patina. Put it in an lineup with other games, you'll never see this stuff.

So get two more games, bury it, play the crap out of it and enjoy it.

I'm wondering if the side art is blacklight reactive. The colors look like a good match. If you have a blacklight flashlight handy, you could confirm.
