Stargate Restore = DONE!

wow... lots of very nice williams cabs recently.

No captions on what you used or how you did it? Prok stencils?

There are some captions there. If you hold your mouse over the pics, you should see a caption pop up

Very nice. I have a similar Stargate project in the works. Mine has a ton of chipping on the bottom edge from the obvious Williams cabinet design issues.

Did you spray oil based or latex based red? Gloss or semi? Were the cabinet yellow and black rattle can or same? Lots of questions, but thanks in advance - helpful to hear what others have successfully done.

I did it all with a sprayer except for the metal parts which I used black/gloss spray cans for. I started out planning to use all latex. The first color I did was the black on the front/top/back which I did in Ben Moore Semi-Gloss Latex. This came out great. Then I picked up these colors at Lowes which I found from various posts...

Base Coat Red = 857-3 (Scarlet Fire)
Yellow = 200A-6 (Susan)

Stay away from these. Maybe the guy at Lowes messed them up, but the red was WAY off. It was almost purple.

I then picked up Ben Moore Gloss Latex Carnival Red Impervex It came out "ok", but not perfect. It had a bit of a texture to it. Maybe I messed up being new to spraying... After a lot of thought, I decided to cut my losses and strip it off and go oil. I'm very glad I did.

The red oil I used was Ben Moore Gloss Red Impervo. It took longer, but I did it with the cab horizontal so gravity was on my side. I think this helped prevent drips, but it made the process a lot more time consuming. I also added Pentrol to the paint.

I did the same horizontal method for the Black and Yellow. Black was Rustoleum Gloss Black Oil and Yellow was Ben Moore Oil Sun Yellow.

I imagine that, using oil and putting it on its side, you must have had to wait a long time for the paint to dry, between stages. Seems like it was well worth it though.

My paint is good enough that I will match to color samples before I sand it down.

Thanks for sharing-
