Which do you like better?

I think Stargate is a better game with better graphics, but Defender is more iconic.

EDIT: Damn...I didn't realize someone JUST asked almost the same question....lol

No reason to compare... They are the best two machines ever made.

Defender. Never played either originally in the arcade, but Defender was the one I had on Atari 2600.

Had both on my Multi-Williams but always played more Defender.

Stargate was a nice improvement on a great game. You would think someone pitching the idea of 6 or 7 controls would have been laughed at...but it worked.

^^ Sums it up perfectly! Like Millipede is greater than Centipede, Asteroids Deluxe is better than Asteroids. Of course there is the dark side see Spy Hunter 2, Joust 2.

Stargate is just as fun (or possibly a little more), but I own Defender because it's what I remember playing and associate with the period. Both games are difficult to walk up and play, so if you're like most of us it will bomb at your parties .. you may as well get the one you want :D

I like the Defender cab better, but I like both games. I only have Defender so far. If I could only have one of them, I'd get a Stargate and put a jrok board in it with an adapter harness so that I could play both. :)

stargate/defender

i have a defender cab with stargate/defender board. has the extra inviso button and it plays both. i kinda like the defender cab better then the stargate imho, i have the best of both worlds. i cant see a difference really in game play and sound. dont know what kind of board this is i had the game built for me by jetusenet. one of my favorite games.

I just got my stargate working again after a few years. The dedicated defender cab is nicer than the stargate, no question about it....as far as gameplay, both are impossible but stargate is a bit prettier, as well as a bit more interesting....

I think it really comes down to which game you play more when you were young (or simply younger..)....I never really played stargate when I was young only defender...I also was never particularly any good at defender.....

As an earlier poster said, both games are pretty tough so gameplay will be limited to those who played the game back in the day (I really hate that expression....)

Stargate. It is easier to keep the boards running and a game that isn't working is a big old waste of space.

Plus I think the movement and the enemies are slightly smoother on Stargate then Defender.

No kidding on the keeping it running part! My Defender is finicky as hell. It's been running a jrok board for quite a while, which makes it infinitely more reliable. Still wish I had a Stargate instead (even though I like the Defender cab more) so that I could have an inviso button without hacking the Defender panel!

I have both, Defender was the 1st game i ever collected. I have had it since 1993 and i'll never sell it. I got a Stargate about 2 years ago, i always liked the cabinet better the art work is awesome! BITD when i saw a Stargate i got pretty excited because i didn't get a chance to play them much. There always seemed to be a Defender in the Arcades i went to but not very often a Stargate.

Personally I have always played my Defender more, a lot more. I like Stargate and i agree some of the graphics are smoother, but Defender is just cool'r it was the 1st. I find Stargate a little easier to play as well at least on the lower leves.

If i had to choose between the two i would go for Defender it's more iconic. It blows me away that Defender doesn't get more love on KLOV.

Since its release, it has become one of the highest grossing arcade games ever, earning over a billion dollars. (eough said)

Honestly you can't go wrong with either, they are both great. Next you will need a Vector, go for Star Castle!

One last thing like mentioned about the game will "bomb" at your Arcade parties. The last few i have had I always make an annoucement, being kind of goofy i always ask "why isn't anymore playing my fav game"??? they always answer the same, too many buttons, don't know how to play it, blah blah, i in return say who wants to learn? There is always one guy that is a gamer and has probably heard of Defender or if my age played it 30 years ago so says yeah teach me. With that a crowd will gather. I give them some quick tips dying off pretty quick as i go then ask do you want to watch me play a game? The crowd will watch and laugh the game is quick and gets crazy. But don't expect Defender to be played a lot, you have to show people and do all the "work" in the relationship when it comes to the might Defender! LOL

But at least you will leave that one "gamers" standing at that 30 year old machine trying to play muttering "so many buttons, so many buttons"
