Recently the left flipper on Stargate started to become weak and couldnt get the ball up the right top ramp. After one game, the coil was almost hot.

I checked and found the sleeve semi melted in the coil so replaced the coil and sleeve, cleaned the filthy, filthy EOS switches on both sides. (And flipper buttons cleaned!) The flipper moves very smoothly now and works fine as long as I dont hold the button in. If the button is held in, the flipper stays up about 1 second, then the fuse blows. So I figured I mis-adjusted the EOS switch. No, its working fine. For fun I disconnected the big yellow cap and now the flipper works perfectly. Holding in the flipper button works, doesn't blow the fuse and the coil stays lukewarm at best.

The question is, do I need that cap on the flipper? Do they go bad?

Do you have the correct coil installed?Did you check for broken diodes on the coil?Do you have the correct fuse in place?

Yes, Yes, and yes.

Flipper works flawlessly with the cap out of the loop. It has to be a bad cap.

How do I test the cap?

Im pretty sure you should just give up on it and sell it to me! ;) Just kidding... kinda.
