Do we have to be careful about swapping out the
main Stargate boards? example: a Rev. B with a Rev. D?
Do the main boards work with all Rom boards, or
are the sets "matched" ? All swaps will be in Stargate
cabs with Stargate components.

Thanks...wondering if anyone has tried this info out for sure to verify
that the same ROM board will work with Rev. B,C, and D of the main pcb.

I haven't, yet. But I've got a big pile of Williams boards in the garage that I hope to get to some time this summer... including Rev B, C & D CPU boards, and Rev A & no-rev Stargate ROM boards.

All of the MPU & I/O boards will work with Stargate (except Defender and Bubbles MPU boards). All of the MPU boards from Rev B on will work with Robotron through Splat! (except Bubbles which used a different CMOS RAM layout).

Variants:
* Splat! uses special chip 2s (which are special chip 1s with the bug fixed).
* Stargate will run in a Robotron and up ROM board if burned in the correct ROMs (Stargates were almost always burned with type A ROMs) Robotron and up were burned with type B ROMs, except a few real early Robotron and Joust sets. This works because Stargate does not use the Special Chips.
* none of the games after Stargate will run on Stargate ROM boards becuase they all require the Special Chips.
* Bubbles ROM boards only work with Bubbles MPU boards.
* there are hardware hacks to "fix" Rev 0 Stargate boards to Rev B.
* there are software hacks to allow Defender to run on later boards.
* there are software hacks to allow Splat! to run on Special Chip1s

Confused enough yet?
