Since I'm locked out of the garage for a while (it was -25C / -13F this AM) I've brought my Stargate Control panel in, and started working on it.

First thing, I had to strip off the really shady overlay. It was seriously ugly and wrecked. Someone had added labels to the buttons.

While stripping I found that the original was still underneath. I assumed it had been wrecked and the new owner just dropped the new one right on top.

I've never messed with a Williams control panel. Good grief, THE GLUE IS EVIL!!!!!!!

Once the overlay was off I spent a couple hours with rags and acetone to get all the adhesive off.
It's now all sanded and ready for some patching.

Question, I see people put clear on them as they were originally, but I also read about folks using a high build primer to make them really smooth and pop because of the white.

Thoughts if you've done it? I do need to bondo it for sure.

Its bare wood, prime it... I prime all my control panels, metal or wood. I just think it helps the overlay stick better. My M-Williams over is still fine no lifting 4 yrs later.

Patch it up with bondo and get it smooth, then put down a couple coats of primer before installing the new CPO.

Where did you get your Stargate CPO from? I need one too.

Williams didn't use primer, I used urethane on the ones i've redone, but haven't installed any overlays on it as of yet.

Your CP looked just like mine pretty much (cigarette burns and all!) I apply all my CPO's to the clean bare surface (just like the factory did), IMO it will stick better than it than it would to a freshly painted surface, if the paint doesn't bond properly to the CP, the CPO is going to pull the paint right off the wood. But everybody is different. Here are pics of mine, got the CPO from arcadeshop.

Never snapped any pics of the final install yet.

The wood was clearcoated at the factory before they installed the CPO, not bare. Maybe that was what you meant. Bare wood would be too dull and porous for a CPO to stick to properly for very long.

I primed my MW cp,wiped it down with denatured alcohol then applied cpo.
6 years and it's still perfect.
I couldn't just clear coat for obvious reasons.;)

I'm now convinced I don't know what to do.
I'll start with patch and bondo.

Clear coat would be original, bond well and sand well. But wouldn't pop as well as white but is more original. I'll likely clearcoat, but maybe not.

Harumph.

What is the big deal being original if you never see it?
I just don't get the logic.
