star wars trilogy arcade game cuts off after 2-3 hours

I purchased a star wars trilogy sit down arcade with 50 inch screen. The machine will only run for a few hours, than the game shuts down. I noticed the cooling fan wasnt working so i replaced the fan, after replacing fan it made it a whole day with no problems. the next day it acted up again after a few hours. if you cut the power off, than back on it only runs for about a minute than cuts off again. If you let machine cool of for awhile it will stay on for hours. please help! I had a professional look at it and he thought it was a problem with the monitor? please commet with any ideas!

thanks

Can you still hear the game play after it shuts down? If you can then most likely only the monitor is shutting off. Otherwise it is more likely the power supply overheating and shutting off.

Do you know how to use a multimeter and/or solder?

I do not hear anything when it shuts off. the whole machine shuts down. I didnt realy understand how the monitor could cause the whole game to shut down, but a repair person told me that was the problem?
thanks for helping me. I can use a multimeter and solder. What do I need to do?

thanks, chris

OK, well I don't see a manual on the usual sites, most likely because it is so modern. The main circuit boards are powered by a power supply and it usually outputs +5vdc, +12vdc, and sometimes -5vdc. This power supply is most likely an enclosed box and it is very likely near the fan you replaced. Do you see anything matching this (vague) description?

star wars

yes. I see what I am pretty sure is the popwer supply. it is in metal case near the fan

what does the power supply power to? is it just the main boards? because the power is still on for the monitor, b/c when i hit the settings button on the remote, it displays picture settings on the monitor. also the lighted sign above the mnitor is still lit up when the game shuts down.

The power supply typicaly only distributes power to the game boards. The monitor will have 120vac piped directly to it's chassis. This power sometimes passes through an external isolation transformer that should not be bypassed.

Sounds to me like your power supply is going bad. You may want to get a new one. If the game cuts off but the monitor and cabinet lights stay on I would look square at the power supply.

Depending on the version of the game you have, there may also be a step-up transformer.
I forget what components in the game required the 220/240 vac. Do not confuse this with an isolation transformer. Check the schematics on the Sega Service page I linked to in my prior post before making any connections and verify with a meter.

I know the deluxe version we operated had them, but I am not sure of the others.

star wars power supply

I tested the power supply, and i am loosing the 3 and the 5 volts out of it when it shuts down. I was told i could use a atx power supply, and re-wire the game. does anyone know how to wire it?

It might be worth just spending the extra money to buy a direct replacement instead of hacking up the original wiring. I've done it before so it would be easier to deal with in the future.

Here ya go:

Chop and strip green
Chop and strip ANY black
Twist these together.
CONSTANT ON is created by doing this

I did this with an NFL Blitz - worked perfectly.
But be advised - some boards are finicky. Some need more than +5 for example fails at +5 works at +5.2. These aren't adjustable. Before you chop any wires simply jam a paperclip into green and into black. Try it out and see if it works for you.

If you have the following power supply installed:
Sega Part #400-5443 MFG By JQA you can buy a direct replacement from either Happ Controls or Betson Enterprises. But the kicker is they cost between $280.00 - $315.00 each.

Here are the links:
http://www.betson.com/products/amusement/SGA-400-5443
http://www.happcontrols.com/wp/item_search.p?ITEM-NO=400-5443

So if the direct replacement is out of the question, buy a computer supply that has the following min specs (From The Power Supply Info Sticker) and follow the directions in Deadly's post:

Output
3.3v 12A
5v 15A (Peak20A)
12v 4A (Peak5.5A)

Also, Sega does not follow normal color coding for wiring.
Here is the wire color per voltage directly out of the Sega PS:
Ground = White
+3.3V = Brown
+5V = Yellow
+12V = Red
