I am going to be replacing the top of a Star Wars upright (and touching up some areas on the side) and was curious if someone has a matching paint code for the black paint?

Or is black paint, just black paint?

I assume that satin finish is probably the right finish to use?

Thanks!

I used a Sharpie marker for the few scratches I touched up in my Star Wars UR. The sheen is slightly different, but unless the light hits at just the right angle, you can't tell.
I use Sharpies for most black art touchups on my games.

Consider this machine is 25 years old. The elements have dulled/changed the original paint color and sheen. You're not going to perfectly match that paint. I would say if your artwork is good and not needing replaced then mask off the artwork and re-paint the cabinet in it's entirety. If it's just a few small scratches you need to hide either use a Sharpie or go buy a paint pen. Flat and satin and try both and see which one blends the best.

I definitely wouldn't go overboard touching up with paint unless you have a corner broken off. If you do Krylon Semi-flat works excellent.

I typically take a can of spray paint and spray it in the top of the cap, then take a paintbrush and do touchups. I used to use a sharpie but I got sick of the shiny look if you look at it at the right angle (extremely picky yeah I know

Black is not just black - there are shades. I noticed this when I was painting a claw game I am restoring. It didn't matter to me since I was doing the whole thing, but I can see that the original black is a bit darker than the black it is now. Definitely get a sample if you can, perhaps from the back door to match if you go the paint route.

on me SW i did some touchups in rustolum oil satin black it is close but in the right light i can see a diffrence.
i did use a paint brush and i should have used a foam roller, but the areas were small and i see a sheen and brush marks but only in the right light
in the future i plan on masking off the artwork and doing the whole side

You know, I always wondered if it was vinyl the way it is peeling. Does anyone know where a match could be found for it? Maybe I would re-vinyl the top that is being replaced....

It'd be easeier to tape off the original art and just spray a new coat of rust oleum satin black on the outer art.. look close at star wars, there's a shiny line where the screened black ends and the vinyl underneath begins.

Prok..is right on...I did this with my star wars upright..the bottom had some nicks so on each side I just carefully taped off silkscreen right up to edge and put new coat of satin black..then removed tape and it looked perfect..just be careful..even with painters tape it can remove silkscreen if you push it down to well...best way is to just use a small piece of tape with a newspaper of something to cover up most of art so it doesn't pull off when you remove tape.

That is what I did on mine and was pretty pleased with the results...

I also used an industrial Sharpie for the nicks and minor scratches in the artwork. You really cant notice it unless you get right up on it and know where to look.

@pr0k, Roma, & Roadrunner - Thanks. I think I will go the rustoleum spray paint route, then. MRoma - your repaint job looks great! For the peeling vinyl, I'll probably exact-o it off near the border of the artwork, mask and spray paint. Do normal paining rules apply here? I.e. primer first, or spray directly to the wood? Sand between coats?

But for the larger, replacement wood pieces...does it take a lot of skill to apply a nice even coat of canned spray paint?

Thanks for bearing with me and my long line of questions...
