So I've been having this problem for some time. The sound on my SW just goes out on the left channel. It doesn't happen all the time and seems to happen after it's been running awhile. I'm just not sure what the heck is going on. The whole thing is very intermittent.

  • Board set has Clay's ESB kit in it.
  • In Empire it doesn't seem to happen as often but the sound levels seem to fluctuate (they get quiet and then loud--don't know if that's normal.)
  • I've wiggled the connecting wire between the soundboard and the main board and pushed in the connector a little. (No change.)
  • I also checked the speaker wire connections. (Fine.)
  • Swapped Audio Boards (No change.)
  • Replaced the 10k ohm pot that was suspect. (No change.)

I'm just looking for some suggestions on what connections I can check or if there is something on the main boards that might cause this?

The sound board has its own self-test mode, may be able to detect the trouble. Also might be a bad POKEY or a cold solder joint on the five pin cable.

Since I swapped sound boards and got the same results I'm going to check the solder joints on the main board. Good call.

Well, I reflowed the solder joints on both the audio board connector and the Main Board assembly. As a precaution I also replaced the cap at C49. I had already replaced the caps at C50 and C51 so I thought why not? It was near the audio connector and a trace connected to the audio connector there so I figured it couldn't hurt. It was older than the hills and the other two caps had actually bulged when I replaced them.

The sound has been running fine now for three days.
