I just ordered a new marquee overlay for 1983 Star Wars, and was wondering if anyone's got any tips on how to remove the current one? I found a webpage a few months back that made it seem slightly complex, but I havent been able to find it again. Is this a job?

Is the old marquee shot? I was looking for a Star Wars marquee myself.

I've seen 2 kinds of marquees for SW, one was the one that wraps over the top of the cab and the other was the standard marquee size.

I was very very nervous about applying the new overlay... but it turned out to be not so bad.

Getting the old one off is really the first annoying part of it... All of the adhesive stuck on the wood and glass makes it a real pain to clean. Clean everything very well... as well as your work area... the last thing you want is to have a piece of dirt or something stuck under your overlay.

Not sure if this is the "correct" way but it was what worked for me...

I peeled the backing from the top off the new overlay and folded it over just far enough so I could get the thing on the glass in the proper location. Then I placed the overlay on the glass, put the glass in place (being careful with the exposed adhesive), wrapped the top around the wood, peeled the remaining backing off and wrapped the bottom.

Looking back... I suppose I could have cut off the backing and re-applied it to the top half making it a little easier to deal with when putting it into place.

... I'll admit I was stressed when I did it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice :) I wasn't aware that it came in different styles, but it is the wrap around one. I wouldnt say that it's shot, but it's not as black as I want it to be and has some cracks around the bottom. I'll be replacing the CPO overlay soon too, any tricks I should know about that? Here's a cell phone pic.

For the control panel, I started at the top (where the yoke and bolt holes are) get that aligned first... then work it down and around the front. Its a pretty easy job. I cleaned and sanded and repainted mine first because there were rust spots.

For artwork stuck to glass it's a pain getting residue off so I've learned the easiest method is to boil water, remove from stove and set the glass in it. Within a few minutes the adhesive just lets go and everything wipes away with little to no effort.
The CPO - tough one. Usually I have a friend of mine sandblast them but I suppose you could boil water and dump it on the CP in the sink and see if that works ... worth a shot.
I think we all tend to forget just how well water works if it's hot enough lol.

BTW - SW marquee cracking at the bottom - without a doubt that is common for those.
