I have never had to work on a Vector monitor yet so I figured I would get some help on this before I tear into it!! I have a Star Wars Cockpit with a 25" Amplifone Monitor in it. The tube itself is an Ampliphone but it has a WG 6100 XY HV board, Deflection board, and neck board. I turned the machine on today and started to hear some crackling from the monitor and the vector lines on the monitor became very dim but the sound and menu screen with the three game choices came up so I know the Main boardset is good. I immediately turned the machine back off and turned it back on and the same thing happened. I do not want to turn the machine back on again as I do not want to cause further damage. I am very good with Raster monitors but have never had to troubleshoot a vector yet.

Should I re-cap the HV and Deflection boards first? What is a common failure point on these and what should be my first course of action for repair?? Any help would be appreciated! I noticed that arcadeshop.com has 3 different repair items for the 6100 XY monitors a monitor rebuild kit, an extra parts kit, and a Low Voltage power supply rebuild kit. What will I need exactly to repair this? Would it be in my best interest to try and get my hands on Amplifone HV board, Deflection board, & Neck board and convert it back to original or just repair the 6100 parts? Or am I completely off the mark here??

I have compiled a list of Amplifone sites as a reference

Have a look in there (in my signature) for most Amp links known to man :) (and some WG6100 also)

Short answer:

- Get Bob Robert's "Deluxe" kit and install (caps and resistors, diodes, fuses, etc). Comes with instructions.
- Buy an LV2000. Install.
- Turn it on, watch the HV cage as some almost-failing component now fails and lights itself or some other component on fire.
- Fix that (repeat if necessary)
- Enjoy.

Hitachi??

Pulled the WG parts out of the Cockpit today and noticed a "Hitachi" sticker on the monitor tube. I thought Rauland made Amplifones as I used to have an upright and it had the Rauland sticker. Is a Hitachi correct for a 25" Amplifone??

I've never heard of a 25 inch tube being used with a 6100 chassis. Are you sure that isn't a 19 inch tube?

Could be correct
What's the model number / part number of the tube? :)

Star Wars Pics and additional info.

There were no Model or Part number's on the Hitachi Label there was a type # 670ETB22 (DF) and serial # S4E090009 and another unidentified number in the corner LR 26413. The flash blotted out these numbers on the label but they are there! I also took pictures of the 25" tube and the 6100 Chassis that came out of the machine. You can see the white cross bar in the machine that should not be there that the Chassis was screwed to!

So what type of monitor tube is this???

Jvc

I just figured it out. It is a 100 deg tube out of a JVC television being driven with a 6100 chassis. The monitor looked so good it even fooled me! I guess for now I will just have to repair the 6100 chassis to try and get this monitor back up unless any of you happen to have a 25" Amplifone just sitting around that you would like to sell! HA! Good luck on that one right!!

Buy an amplifone deflection board and a high voltage board and it will work with both 19 and 25 inch star wars tubes. It is the 6100 i believe that is limited to the 19 inch tube.

Pretty sure the 25" tubes are 90 degrees. I can't say with 100% assuredness. I would use what you have and see if it fixes the problem after you rebuild everything.

Yep

Yeah, that is what I am going to try first. Parts are on the way from Bob Roberts and Arcadeshop as we speak! I will post the outcome!

The 25" Rauland tube was driven by a K6100 yoke. There was no amplifone 25" yoke. It is the same reason why the K6100 19" tubes were 100 degree and the amplifone (rauland) tubes were 90 degree.

So to clarify this mess
K6100 - 25" and 19" 100 degree tubes
Amp - 25" 100 degree tube (with k6100 yoke) and 19" 90 degree tube with amp yoke

FYI - (while most will say you can't) I have personally run a Rauland 90 degree tube with an AMP yoke and K6100 chassis and it looks like shit. It works but the screen is severely bowed outward where as the pincushion on a 100 degree K6100 setup is bowed inward.

Repaired Monitor

Just finished installing a Bob Roberts deluxe 6100 rebuild kit and have the monitor working again! There were modifications on the boards because of it driving the TV tube but any of the parts that did not match up I was able to find at Radio Shack. Plus I ended up destroying a few resistors just to get some shelack off that another repairer had put on the HV board for some reason. Thanks for all who helped me out! Hopefully one day some new Amplifones will be availiable so we can avoid these Jury Rigs! R/Joe
