After weeks of trying to get the WG6100 monitor running, I have some success today...

Got to play the game for about 30 min or so, then it goes nuts! (See video)

I just downloaded all of the game manuals, and will start troubleshooting.. But thought someone may have some ideas to help move the process along.

Thanks in advance.

i'm no vector expert, but it looks like almost like a high voltage shutdown. Have you checked your B+? And, have you done a cap kit on it? And, did you reflow all of the header pins, and check for cold solder joints?

Yes, I just rebuilt the entire monitor.. I'd agree, it seems like a monitor issues (and considering I just did a lot of work on it, that would also have good odds), but I notice that I cannot fire the guns when the screen is off. So, the sound seems to be impacted too. To me, that points to the game board.. No?

yes that does point toward game board issues. The easiest way is to try it in a known working cab, and see if that's it for sure or not - or to try the monitor in a known good game. have you reseated and cleaned the interconnect boards? That could cause it, i think, as well as bad pots on the pcb.

Self test says "VG RAM2 AT 3P"

it makes 16 tones, the 6th one is a "sad" tone...

Looking now to see what this all means.

I've had the same exact problem. The issue is with the AVG board, and running the self test will point in this direction as to which chips need to be replaced. keep a healthy supply of the RAM chips on hand, or swap them all out with new ones if possible when you rebuild the AVG board, this should cure the problem. I'm by no means a vector expert, but after some serious trial and error this seemed to be the solution.

You have hair left??? lol
Mine is all gone and at the point of grinding teeth now..im way behind you.
I have a thread with just a garbled screen..no greens yet..burst on and off pulse on deflection board and coin drops ..but no game!!!!

tested in my working machine..same problem..think its the AV and game board.

Star Wars was working for a few weeks... But died this weekend when my friend came over with his amplifone monitor for me to help fix. Unrelates, but I am thinking my machine got jealous because it had the WG monitor in it...

Anyway...

I only have video on the top half of the screen. I am thinking I read about this problem somewhere, but cant find it now.

Will try to post a photo in a little bit.

Check the solderings of the connectors that go to the deflection transistors.

These are bound to crack. (track pin to next connected pin with a DVM in diode-test mode).

Else one of those transistors may have died.

Ah! I was thinking the problem was on the game board because I have replaced almost every part in that WG monitor already. I did re-solder the connectors, and all of the transistors are new (Bob Roberts kit)... But, I will test them again and report back! Thanks.

I found cracks just "away" from the actual soldering islands. Reflowing those solderings won't help in that case. You have to bridge the "gaps".

Here's a pic of one of those breaks (and this was pretty visible, the other wasn't that clear):

And here's how I fixed them.

I think this is the cause of my problem... One of the wires broke at the transistor (see pic).

However, while I was doing all of this, the bridge rectifier in the power supply decided it was time to expire too (I guess one too many power cycles). May run out to Radio Shack on the off chance that they still actually sell discrete electronic parts (HA!). 35MB10A, I think it is a 35A part, but it only uses a 20A fuse??

Else, I am one again off to pay $5 to ship a $2 part.. :(

Found a 25A rectifier at the shack.. Put that in, and Star Wars is all functional again (until next time).

Now, I have to pull my WG, and install my friends Amplifone to find out what that thing is not working. I am sure I will be posting for help on that in no time. ;)

Thanks again!

The only kit i know of is the cap kit from Bob, he has all the other parts you will need though except for the flyback itself. Read the amplifone upgrade FAQ and make a list of everything it suggests then order it from Bob.

Already heard back from Bob, saying he saw no need to do the changes listed in the FAQ.

Also asked him about the TO220 resistors I read about, he did not have them either.

Going to take this discussion over to the monitor forum.
