My brother and I were given an old Star Wars cockpit game, it needed a ton of work, did not even turn on. Here is a quick list of what I did, where I am and now, where I need to go.
1. I replaced all blown fuses, cleaned all connectors
2. Replaced the old Red is Dead Flyback on the HV board, put all new caps in, replaced the 24V + and - regulators, the BU406D
3. replaced all the open "jumpers"
4. replaced voltage transistors on deflection board, jumpers, and caps
turned it on, we have power, we have HV now and we get the 16 beeps pause, then 16 repeats
on the screen we are getting bright lines on and off, with the self test switch in other position I get the voice of " the force will be with you ...always"
no game, no self test diag on screen.
the shot killer led on the deflection board goes off when screen lines go on. it sounds as if the game keeps restarting, almost like it is caught in a pre-start loop, and can't boot.
just to make sure my HV and deflection board repairs were ok, I shut all the monitor voltages and started the game with an x y scope hooked up to the x y output on the main pcb. I am getting the same line bursts as I was on the monitor on my scope, and it just keeps repeating. I examined the main pcb and found the A to D IC had a bad pin, got a new one on line and replaced that, still same thing. All voltages check normal on the main pcb
I have the three cr 6 5 and 4 all on then all off when the game tries to start, then all off again.
what do these CR's and CR 2 indicate. also all switches seem to be in the right place.
seems to me like I have some problem with the game logic, but I can't seem to find too much help on where to look and the manuals I found on line really don't get into the game boards themselves.
Any direction anyone can point me in?
thanks guys.johnwlir
one more thing I need to add,
I temp grounded the watchdog pin to ground and the game does not re-boot anymore, there is not game play, but it does not seem like it keeps re-starting. the 3 led's are out and the one cr2
I can't get through any testing other than the 16 high low tones.
seems like my watchdog circuit is continously sending reset pulses to the main pcb, so that tells me that a problem exists inthe microprocessor ckt.
what is telling it to reset, and when I bypass watchdog where should I look
manual says
look for open or shorted address or data bus? not sure what they mean
falulty micro processor - ok where
faulty bus buffer - point me in the right direction
faulty ram or rom, ok what chip is that
I have come a long way, not giving up!
thanks
