This just started today

Went to fire up my Star Wars upright and started hearing "pops" coming from
the speakers as the machine was warming up.

They are pretty consistent - about 1 per second.

Started a game and the "pops" continued.

During gamplay now, most of the "music" is gone and the "pops" also interrupt the game
sound fx.

Here is a You Tube video of the issue.

where do I start looking??

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it's constantly resetting. The sound is equal to that what I hear when I switch from SW to ESB (or the other way around of course) and there's a reset when that happens.

You can also hear the sound and then the pop interrupts the sound...

Make sure your the sound-board is firmly pushed into the interconnect PCB. Also check the wire connectiong but that's not likely the problem.

Check loose chips on the sound-board.

Also: run the hardware tests :)

Thanks

I ran the hardware tests - everything tests "ok"

In fact, part of the way through the hardware tests the "popping" will stop

BUT, as soon as I exit the test mode and go back into game mode, the pops
return immediately.

Already removed the boards and re-seaded all the connectors, no help

Will try re-seading the chips on the sound board next.

thx

I had the same issue. Speech is Resetting on you (it sounds like it). I sent the boards out for repair AFTER i switched every socketed chip. I thought it might be the LS161 chips (not socketed / clock sync chips) but it was something else - the repair guy (Bills video service - great guy) - sent it back and I think 4460 chips?? I dont remember sorry to say. I am pulling the boards this week anyway and can have a look.

Thx for the info Jon

what was the cost of your repair?

Do you have contact info for the guy who fixed yours?

Thx Much

Rob

Yes - All sound board. I was happy about that somewhat because it was a small board i needed to ship (as opposed to the BIG PCB stack). Dont take my word on the chip number - i dont recall. But i know it was NON socketed, and i know it was NOT the LS161 (clock sync - three chips).

Of course this may not be exactly indicative of your issue. It could be anything.

My suggestion - pull the sound board PCB wire / fire up the game - does clicking go away? If so, you know its that board.

Next, IF you can, switch all socketed chips with a working board.... if not, you can try the elaborate sound test in SW diagnostics - its in the SW troubleshooting guide and may lead you to a chip. If that turns up no results than its most likely a non socketed chip.

For non socketed chips there are 10 i think. When i get the cab off the wall this week i will have a look at what chip gave me the problem.

By the way - for clarity - i had the same exact issue (clicking constantly) with NO SPEECH. I did have music always though.

Jon,

Yes, I disconnected the sound board and the "pop" goes away

So it's definitely something on the sound board
