I just p/u a converted ST in an Asteroids cab ($60) and I have a couple of questions. The cab has Asteroids art work and is in need of some repairs. I'll add a pic tonight.

1. What do you think the G08 is worth and a working ST pcb?

2. Is it worth to restore it in the Asteroids cab?

3. Other thoughts on what to do?

Thanks for the help...

I have seen the G08 sell for about $200 and the ST board set sell for $150-250. Personally I love this game and I think the most attractive upright configuration is the asteroids conversion. I'd restore it, or if the cab is too far gone I'd scavenge the parts and put them in one of the many non-working ST captain's chairs...

I'd let it sit and look around for a non-working captain's chair. They come up for sale once in a while, and usually are missing the monitor or it's shot, along with the boards not working. The game is a lot better with the captain's chair. I AM KIRK!!

I restored an upright a few years ago. I had chad at arcadecup go through the monitor and he did A+ work. Mongo repaired the boards for me. I still owe him avocados.

In my opinion, a major problem with the game was that the game interface was not designed very well. You can play an entire game by only looking at the overhead (map) view and never have to pay attention to the front (cockpit) view. They should have made the cockpit view larger and come up with a smaller map.

The game is also very repetitive. You basically shoot Klingon ships and dock with space stations, and every once in a while you get to shoot a mine layer. I can understand the technological limitations of the time, but the game could have been much better.

First I would like to say I think every serious game collector has to have a SEGA Star Trek in their collection.
Second ,don't believe all the hooey about the G08 being a fire hazard. I have 3 and have never had a fire in one. If yours is working then not much to do. If it's not working but complete then that's Ok too as they are not that hard to fix. The hardest part would be finding NOS side art but it dose come up from time to time and you can always go with the inkjet printed side art which someone is selling. I have one in an Asteroids cabinet and it makes a nice looking game. You could also find a dedicated cabinet, SEGA convert a cabinet or a Captains chair cockpit and install the guts in one of them and convert Asteroids back into an Asteroids like I almost did. If you haven't seen it before check out my web site pages of my 3 Star Trek games.

Despite never having seen a single Star Trek movie or episonde of any incarnation on television, *ducks* I played this game at CAX last year and thought it was very fun.

I like to the look of the ST Asteroids conversion, too.

If you are intersted in keeping the game, then get rid of the old Asteroids side art and fix up the cabinet.

If you sell the parts, I'm in need of a working sound board. ;)

Dude  Where do you live? In a cave? Don't have a TV? Or did you just crawl out from under a rock? Your pulling our legs right?
If it is so you have to start at the beginning with the original series all the way to the new Star Trek movie.

Sitting in that captain's chair is the coolest arcade thing I can think of.

Lean your head back all the way and listen to Spock yak out sector numbers- holy cow!
Repetitive?
As far as I know, ALL the games are.
I can play it forever on generous settings, but cranking it down to one initial shield and bonus every 30K makes it pretty difficult. I can barely get 250K like that.

Oh- have you made it to the sectors where the Klingons immediately go into collision mode?

I recently moved my PacMan and all of a sudden, my cockpit was 100% more accessible! I've been playing a few games here and there.

I think it would be even cooler with a Starfleet shirt on.....

That dude with the $400 boards on ebay doesn't even have them tested.

I'll sell a full working set for $200.

Those G08 monitors aren't bad if you are methodical about going through them. Don't bother a cap kit unless you can test the transistors first. They're not so bad. That being said, I've got several HV units that I don't know WHAT to do with.. Spares..

The standup Star Trek was my very first game. I grew up on TOS reruns, so it holds something special to me. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

As a Trekkie, dedicated Star Trek game owner, and Star Trek world record holder, I'd have to say you are entirely correct about the on-screen view, but only from a spectator's vantage point. For the person actually playing the game, the overhead view is the only view needed.

In fact, that is all I look at.

what is the world record?

It's a little over 123 million and it was set 25 years ago. No one has ever come close to beating it.

To Kstillin's question, yes I have gotten far enough in the game where the ships immediately go into collision mode. I still have my machine and play it occassionally. It's not a bad game, but certainly it could have been better. Like I said, get the Captain's Chair version if you can, it's the best way to play the game in my opinion.

It would be cool for someone to develop some new levels for this game, if it's even possible.

Thanks for all of the responses. The G08 does need some work. I will try and fix the monitor and look for a captains chair. I will also fix up the Asteroids cab and play it in there till I find the other at a good price.

Old Darren-

That 123M is very impressive. I think I've hit maybe 3 million when I first got it, but don't know what the settings were. I'm sure it wasn't with bonus at every 30K.

It would be cool to see some of this action. I recall that when the Klingons went kamikaze, you could launch a photon, flee, and all of them would run right into the blast.

How long would it take to hit 123M?

What's the difference between Tournament and Marathon settings?

Spock saying 'sector zero point one' is the coolest...

I have the Asteroids Conversion and I almost made the mistake of selling it. And I too play the game mostly using the overhead map.

I need to do a convergence on my G08, I wish there was a way of getting a test pattern on the monitor.

Marathon settings are factory settings.

This is the only game I'm aware of that has "Tournament" Settings labeled as such in the manual. I don't have my manual in front of me but here is some of it: http://www.crazykong.com/dips/StarTrek.txt

I averaged 10 million an hour, and my high game, which was during the Ironman invitational in 1985, took about 12 hours. (I rolled the shields and died out before I could build them back up).
