First is the board set. When you turn on the game you'll hear the star trek music, but then you'll hear what sounds like static. The game wont coin up, and shows no life besides that music when first turned on. Any Suggestions? By the way, I kept the monitor disconnected from the game, because it has its own issues.

Second, the G08 monitor. It was popping the fuse at location F400. I found a burnt diode at loaction D407. I hoping this is what causing the fuse to pop. Manual calls for a 1A 200V diode at that location. Can I use a IN4004 as its replacement, its rated at 1A 400V, Is that ok?

I found a mod that said I should move the 2n6259 transistors from the outside of the heatsink to the inside, because of better airflow. Would this be ok?

No one knows if I can use a IN4004 diode as a replacement for the burnt resistor?

I ordered a cap kit and some 2N6259 transistors from bob roberts.

Also, when I push the red button on the CPU board the red led gives one quick flash.
What does that mean, anybody know?

Send a PM to Mongo. he knows the game really well.

You could try re-seating the sound board. probably too simple of a fix.

I'm not sure if using higher voltage components is recommended for anything but capacitors. Everything else I always go for exact same value replacement. I'm about to rebuild the G08 in my ST as well.

Does anyone know of any enhancement kits for the G08 to improve its reliability?

I am experiencing similar problems with my ST game as you described in #1. (static)

The game was working fine, until one day I powered it up and got the static after the initial music. I PM'd Mongo at the time and here is what he told me to check out...

"I would check your power supply for problems first. The grounds on the supply are flaky and can cause your static. Bad grounds are also a primary cause of stress on the deflection circuit. I think there are FOUR fuses on the monitor chassis (there may be five). Check them all. If you find a bad fuse, before you power back up, tie a wire from your monitor frame to the board cage to the power supply. That will help your ground problem."

I haven't gotten around to working on my machine since then, so I don't know if it will help. But, maybe the information will be useful to you.

Good luck.

Yes, you can use a 400V diode where the 200V one is. This is the peak-inverse-voltage rating that the diode can withstand before conducting in the reverse-bias direction.

I've seen people perform the little reverse mounted power transistor trick, but I can't say it helps any. The thing they're mounted to is a giant heat sink anyway and the fan is blowing through the fins already. I'm skeptical; I'd like to see some temperature measurements with both.

If you want to help it run cooler overall, reduce the voltage being supplied to the monitor by switching the AC input lugs on the main transformer. You can find information on the web.

The quick flash of the LED is good. It would be on steady or flashing if there were issues with the game. Does it play blind?

There is a self-test described in the manual. There should be a small red button on the CPU card visible from the top of the cage. I think you press the start button to move through the tests. If there is a RAM issue, it will blink out the chip number at one stage.

Keep at it.

Awesome man!! You're making me want to get back into my ST Captains chair version and get it running. I was also having sound issues. I'm considering contacting Alex at ElektronForge and sending the boards off for repairs.

Yeah.. I know that guy.. he's alright. LOL

Just kidding. Kerry is a good friend and we share a storage unit in Columbia. I just moved my ST there recently so I can work on it.

Is it static (crackly, random in and out) or white noise (constant)?

The sound was working, but stopped when I was trying
to get the monitor working. Found a burnt resistor R30
on the speech board. Need to replace that resistor and
retest the sound.

Semi fixed my sound problem. It finally dawned on me tonight. My sound worked one minute and stopped working the next, and it hit me, check the speaker, because I also stopped hearing the speaker thump sound when the power is turned on. So I checked the speaker and low and behold the speaker wire was off. Must have come off when I was taking the monitor in and out and yanked on the harness.

So now I have sound again, but like I said up top, I still have a problem. I turn on the game, hear the music play and then constant static over top the sounds. I ran a test and you hear the sounds faintly under this loud static, that wont stop until I turn off the game. I have to power supplies, that both do the same thing.

Any Suggestions?

Sound issues seem to be common with this game. Mine is doing the same thing but I put it aside cause it was driving me nuts. I can play the game and have game sounds..but no speach. Sometimes I got a bit of static. I've done everything except pull the speakers to see if something is loose...and I REALLY don't want to do that since this is the sit down version.

Do you have any speech? Sounds like maybe your sound board is ok, but the speechboard is outputting static overtop the audio if you can hear the sounds under the static.

Remove the connector that goes to the speechboard and jumper pins 1 and 3 together; by doing this you are remove the speechboard from the circult but audio should still pass through, so you should just have game sounds and no speech. If you still have static, it's the sound board. If not, the problem is the speech board.

Check the TL082 at U11 and the TL081 at U8 for starters. After that it gets a bit more complex.

The static has something to do with the grounds. I ran a jumper wire from a ground pin on the power supply to the cage and the staitc was almost eliminated. I still got a pop here and there, but from what it was before, constant static, its an improvement. So now I have to figure out where the bad ground is.

The other problem is that I have no speech at all, just the sounds.
