Star Castle

Does it play blind?

I'll be testing out my 2nd chassis tonight after i get back from my niece/nephews birthday party.

Yeah, It's still in the car so I haven't had a chance to look at it, but it is playing blind. Has a vertical line on screen so I'm hoping the horizontal colapse is something easy to fix.

The cab is in rough shape and I'll need to look it over to see if it is salvageable (I think so)

Hey...your left side art is in much better shape than mine.

Strange... my back door OBVIOUSLY took on water (it's bowed about 8 degrees and starting to swell)... but the cab itself appears to have very little (if any) water damage.

Congrats! I love mine!

Mine works great except for what sounds like a crackily speaker. Need to look into that since Star Castle has such awesome sound!!

Great game!

I played my Star Castle tonight for about 45 mins after I realized how much I suck! Nothing has changed since I was 12 playing it back in the day! LOL

Mine has a somewhat crackly speaker as well... but only during certain sounds (for example the explosion after I die)... so I think it may be by design?

I cleaned up the marquee last night... this games marquee rocks as a little black paint works AWESOME at blacking out any damage on the black parts of the marquee... I also replaced the marquee with a walmart special. I wanted to use the original, but after going to Lowes AND Home Dept to find NO ballasts to use... I gave up and picked up an under the counter model.... which works perfect.

I think Star Castle is an ideal one to build a new cabinet for, if needed. They're not exactly a dime a dozen or super common, a lot of the cabinets seem to be rough, and surely sideart will get made at some point. I'd like to find a super rough one as an excuse to build a cabinet for one.

That's exactly what I have. I think I'll end up building a new cab for it as it is pretty water logged.

So, if the inner areas were black vinyl and the outer white vinyl, and you built a new cabinet?

Would you spray the black areas with satin black paint and use white vinyl on the outsides? White and black vinyl as original? I would definitely do the white sides at least with vinyl, if that was originally done that way.

The outside white is paint... not vinyl... at least on my Cinematronics version of it.

The front is and inside appear to be black vinyl.

yes i had the same prob here with the painted cab.i was saying the star castle i have here was painted and didnt have vinyl on it and 2 people replied saying that theirs were vinyled.

this one i have has no vinyl on it full stop,i cant see anyone removing the art to remove the vinyl then reapplying it again.

mine was definately painted not vinyled, the art has the shrink marks/scum that you get round when its shrunk over the years.
:)

Welp... I just went and took a look. I think you guys are right. It's vinyl. Looking at the pick of my beat up corner you can see what I thought was woodgrain showing through... but a closer inspection shows the cab is particleboard or some sort... nothing with a "grain"...

That is a bit of a bummer as I HATE vinyl... I'll probably stick to white paint... I'd rather paint 10 cabs than apply vinyl to one.

I wonder how much of a bitch it will be to remove...

I don't see that peeling off of the particleboard. And it's woodgrain white vinyl at that... I wonder if it's available anywhere. I have white woodgrain vinyl on the playfield rails for a classic Stern pin. One is kinda banged up, but I don't know where I could get more white vinyl with the woodgrain texture.

Rich at thisoldgame has looked high and low for the white woodgrain vinyl for his Galaxian reproduction artwork. I don't believe he ever found any.

I don't think it's woodgrain. I'm working on cleaning up an Armor Attack I just got this week, and the top of the cabinet has the same apparent 'grain', but not as bad. The rest of the white is smooth.

I think the vinyl just expands/contracts on that top edge and causes small vertical tears that look like wood grain.

Edit -------
Nevermind! I just went out there with a flashlight, and it does appear to have a woodgrain type texture to the whole of the white vinyl. I guess I just learned something tonight!

Looking at the coin door now... it appears the coin door is designed to include lamps for the coin slots but they aren't wired. Did any come with lighted coin doors? If so, I'll likely retrofit some lamps in there... if not... hmmm...
